Job Overview
The Grind Room Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations in the grinding and finishing area of the foundry. This role ensures castings are properly finished to meet quality standards, productivity targets, and safety requirements. The supervisor leads and develops the grinding team, manages workflow, and enforces policies to achieve on-time delivery and customer satisfaction.
- Plan, prioritize, and assign daily grinding operations to meet production schedules.
- Enforce ISO 9001:2015 standards, foundry procedures, and work instructions.
- Inspect work in process and finished parts for conformance to requirements.
- Ensure compliance with PPE, lockout/tagout, and all safety policies.
- Conduct root cause analysis on quality or safety issues and lead corrective actions.
- Directly supervise grinding operators across assigned shifts.
- Provide training, coaching, and cross-training to develop employee skillsets.
- Conduct performance evaluations, issue corrective actions when necessary, and recognize strong performance.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain records of production, scrap, downtime, and safety incidents.
- Participate in daily/weekly production meetings to report grind room status.
- Recommend labor, equipment, and tooling needs to management.
- Support audits (internal and external) by demonstrating compliance in the grind room.
- Ensure castings are finished to blueprint, customer, and internal quality standards.
- Monitor throughput, minutes-per-part, scrap, and rework rates; take corrective action when performance falls short.
- Oversee equipment use and maintenance (grinders, cutoff saws, dust collection systems, etc.).
- Support implementation of automation and process improvements in the grind room.
- Strong knowledge of grinding, finishing, and handling of castings.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and quality standards.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven track record in safety enforcement and production efficiency.
- Experience with ISO 9001:2015 systems and audits.
- Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement projects.
- Familiarity with automated grinding equipment.
- Frequent standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and working in a hot, dusty, noisy environment.
- Must wear required PPE at all times (respirator, hearing protection, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, etc.).
