D&L Foundry, a foundry located in Moses Lake, WA, is seeking a hands-on Metallurgist to own melt quality, heat treatment, and metallurgical process control in a high-volume iron foundry environment. This person will drive scrap reduction, stabilize processes, and turn data into decisions—grounded in standards and shop-floor realities.
- Melt & Alloy Control: Manage charge makeup, inoculation, nodularity, CE/CEV, and thermal analysis. Own spectrometer programs and daily chemistry verification.
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure castings meet ASTM/AASHTO/customer specs; maintain ISO 9001 evidence (control plans, MSA, calibration, lot traceability).
- Process Engineering: Control plans, and work instructions across molding, pouring, shakeout, heat treat, and post-processing.
- Quality Improvement: Lead RCCA for defects.
- Testing & Lab: Oversee metallography, microstructure (nodule count/shape), hardness, tensile/bend.
- Supplier & Material Control: Qualify scrap/ingot/alloy suppliers; create incoming criteria and dispositions.
- Training & Leadership: Mentor operators/techs on sampling, testing, and metallurgical fundamentals; drive a safety-first culture.
- BS in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering (or ME with metallurgy focus) or equivalent foundry experience.
- Comfortable on the floor—sampling hot metal, auditing processes, and coaching operators.
- Clear, concise technical writing for procedures and customer reports.
- Experience with ductile iron nodularity control, magnesium treatment, and inoculation practice.
- Exposure to simulation (MAGMA, SolidCast), 3.5-OES spectrometry, thermal analysis, and metallography.
- ISO 9001(8D, A3, PDCA); Green Belt a plus.
- ≥25% reduction in metallurgical scrap on top 5 defect modes.
- Stable CE/nodularity/control chart performance with clear reaction plans.
- Up-to-date control plans, PFMEAs, and work instructions for all major part families.
- On-time, data-driven customer reports with zero spec escapes.
- Foundry floor exposure (heat, dust, PPE)
