Superior is currently seeking a Director of Engineering to join our team in Houston, TX (On-Site 5 days).
The Director of Engineering is a senior leadership role responsible for guiding the engineering organization, driving technical excellence, and ensuring the successful delivery of high‑quality products and platforms. This role oversees engineering strategy, execution, people development, and cross‑functional alignment with product, design, and business stakeholders. This position is active with IP development.
- Develop and execute an engineering strategy aligned with Superior’s business goals, operational needs, and customer commitments.
- Lead and mentor engineering team members
- Drive a culture of safety, engineering rigor, continuous improvement, and operational excellence
- Partner with senior leadership to shape long-term technology direction and product portfolio evolution.
- Active in IP development and management.
- Serve as a working manager, actively participating in design reviews, modelling, analysis, and troubleshooting.
- Contribute to engineering work – mechanical design, field failure analysis, reliability improvements – when needed
- Support field operations by diagnosing issues, assisting in development of corrective actions, and improving tool reliability and performance
- Provide technical guidance on materials, manufacturing methods, downhole system behavior, and harsh-environment engineering constraints.
- Oversee planning and delivery of engineering projects, ensuring milestones, budgets, and quality standards are met
- Collaborate with product line leaders to prioritize engineering efforts based on business impact
- Ensure that engineering solutions meet safety, regulatory, and operational requirements
- Drive root-cause analysis and corrective actions for product failures, ensuring lessons learned translate into design improvements
- Manage and develop engineering talent
- Provide coaching, career growth, and performance feedback to engineers and drafters
- Build succession plans, staffing strategies, and training programs aligned with future business needs
- Shape engineering standards, design methodologies, and documentation practices
- Provide high-level technical guidance for new designs, product families, and product upgrades
- Champion reliability engineering, testing rigor, and lifecycle improvement programs
- Evaluate technologies, suppliers, and manufacturing approaches that advance tool performance or reduce operational costs
- Partner with Product Line, Operations, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and QA/QC to ensure engineering solutions are practical, reliable, and scalable
- Coordinate closely with field operations to align engineering decisions with real-world performance demands
- Communicate project status, risks, and technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

- Mechanical Engineering Degree
- 10+ years of work experience in mechanical design engineering for downhole drilling tools- Minimum of 2 years in engineering leadership roles
- Strong technical background in modern project management practices
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution
