Position Summary:
The Crane Operator is responsible for safely operating various types of cranes to lift, move, position, and reposition loads. This role requires attention to safety protocols, load calculations, and effective communication with site personnel to ensure efficient and safe material handling on job sites or within production facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
•Operate mobile, overhead, or tower cranes to lift, move, and position heavy materials and equipment as required
•Inspect cranes daily to ensure mechanical safety and proper function prior to operation
•Calculate safe loads and adjust lifting techniques based on weather, weight, and space constraints
•Communicate with riggers and signal persons to coordinate lifts and maintain safety
•Report any equipment issues, incidents, or near-misses to supervision immediately
•Maintain accurate logs of crane use, inspections, and maintenance activity
•Follow OSHA, ANSI, and company safety regulations at all times
•Assist in minor maintenance, cleaning, or adjustments to equipment
•Participate in safety meetings and training sessions as required
Qualifications:
•High school diploma or GED required
•Valid Crane Operator Certification a plus
•2+ years of experience operating cranes in construction, industrial, or manufacturing settings
•Strong understanding of crane safety procedures and hand signals
•Ability to read and interpret load sheets, shipping documents, and inventory systems (often digital)
•Experience unloading railcars and loading flatbeds
•Comfort working with magnet cranes or C-hooks (commonly used for steel products)
•Forklift or rigging certification is a plus
Working Conditions:
•Work may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions or indoors in industrial settings
•Physical fitness: Ability to perform tasks that require strength, balance, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination.
•Shift work or overtime may be required
Safety Requirements:
•Awareness of railcar and truck dock safety (e.g., blue flag rule, wheel chocks, derails)
•Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required on-site
•Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): If maintenance or adjustments are needed on crane or rigging gear
•Daily crane inspection: Check brakes, hoist limit switch, wire rope condition, hook latch, etc.
