Reporting to the Commissioning Manager, the Commissioning Technologist Student will be an integral part of the Commissioning team, gaining hands-on experience in the field with primary and secondary power equipment. You will assist in commissioning and testing equipment and learn how medium- to high-voltage substation power delivery systems operate, including breakers, switchgear, relays, transformers, and more. You will be paired with a senior team member who will mentor you and provide exposure to many different aspects of the industry, helping you build practical skills and a strong foundation for your future career.
In this role, you’ll gain exposure to a variety of activities related to medium- and high-voltage power systems, including:
- Working safely alongside all members of the construction and commissioning team
- Assisting with testing and maintenance of electrical equipment
- Supporting the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control equipment in transmission substations
- Learning to read blueprints, analyze test reports, and identify potential improvements
- Working with high-voltage equipment such as circuit breakers, transformers, switches, and control circuits for protection and monitoring systems
- Calibrating electronic equipment and instruments as needed
- Using industry-standard test equipment, including:
- TTR (Transformer Turns Ratio) testers
- Omicron secondary test sets
- Winding resistance testers
- Omicron CPC 100
- CT saturators
- Hands-on experience with substation commissioning and electrical testing
- Industry standards and safety practices for medium- and high-voltage systems
- How to work with and interpret technical drawings and reports
- Practical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Currently enrolled in a relevant post-secondary program (Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or similar)
- Strong interest in learning about electrical power systems
- Comfortable working in a team environment and following safety procedures
- Detail-oriented with good communication skills
- Eager to learn and take guidance from senior team members
- Able to work out of town on a shift rotation (e.g. 4 and 3, 8 and 6, etc.)
- Willing to take a drug and alcohol test according to local laws
