A bucket truck helper, or ground crew member, provides essential support to a bucket truck operator during work on elevated projects. This role combines labor-intensive tasks with a strong emphasis on safety and communication.
The bucket truck helper is responsible for assisting the operator by preparing equipment, ensuring a safe work area, and performing tasks related to the project. They are integral to the efficiency and safety of the entire operation.
- Set up barriers, signs, and flags around the work zone to protect the crew and the public from hazards.
- Help load, transport, and unload tools, equipment, and materials to and from the work site.
- Act as a spotter, providing clear and constant communication with the bucket truck operator to guide them safely into position.
- May operate and service various hand tools and power tools.
- Keeps the work truck and the site clean and organized by collecting and disposing of debris.
- Performs daily inspections and routine maintenance on equipment to ensure it is in good working order.
- Assist with specific project tasks, which may include tree trimming and brush removal, wiring work for electrical or telecommunication lines, and other duties as assigned.
- Support the rigging and lowering of material from the elevated work area.
- Work is performed outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- The job involves exposure to hazards such as traffic, high-voltage equipment, loud machinery, and various insects.
- Experience: Prior experience in a related field such as construction, electrical work, or tree care is preferred.
- Must be highly dependable. Work comes to a halt if absent!
- Physical fitness: This is a physically demanding role that requires standing, walking, lifting, and the ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Safety certification: Familiarity with OSHA safety regulations and a commitment to safe working practices are essential.
- Communication: Effective communication skills are necessary to coordinate with team members.
