The Secondary Operator supports the fabrication team by performing essential finishing, preparation, and material-handling tasks that ensure parts flow efficiently through the shop. This role handles grinding, deburring, saw operations, basic machine support, and general shop duties to maintain quality, productivity, and safety. No programming required — hands-on, detail-focused work.
- Grind, deburr, clean, and finish fabricated parts to meet customer quality standards.
- Perform basic cutting, trimming, and cleanup on stainless steel and other materials.
- Assist with simple machine operations (e.g., shear, roller, brake prep, ironworker) under supervision.
- Operate hand tools, grinders, saws, and sanders safely and effectively.
- Stage parts for welders and fabricators.
- Assist with fitting and prep work as needed.
- Move parts between workstations and maintain organized staging areas.
- Assist with packaging and final part cleaning prior to shipment.
- Perform visual inspection and basic dimensional checks.
- Identify surface defects (porosity, pits, weld spatter, scratches, etc.) and correct as needed.
- Communicate issues to leads or supervisors immediately.
- Maintain clean workstations, sweep, remove scrap, and perform basic maintenance tasks.
- Check tools, grinders, and equipment to ensure safe operation.
- Refill consumables and notify supervisors when stock is low.
- Follow all Bayside safety policies and PPE requirements.
- Report hazards, defective equipment, and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Maintain safe handling techniques for stainless steel and fabricated parts.
- Experience using grinders, hand tools, and basic fabrication equipment.
- Ability to read simple prints or follow instructions from lead fabricators.
- Strong attention to detail, especially with finishing work.
- Ability to lift and move materials safely (up to 50 lbs).
- Reliable attendance and solid work ethic.
- Prior experience in a fabrication or welding shop.
- Familiarity with stainless steel finishing.
- Forklift experience (Bayside will certify).
- Good communicator; asks questions when unsure.
- Works well independently and with others.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn multiple tasks.
