Job Summary:
The Cable Plow Operator is a non-exempt position responsible for operating cable plow equipment for burying fiber optic cable, coaxial cable, and/or power lines. This position will work at various sites throughout the Southeast.
Essential Tasks:
•Operate cable plow machinery to install underground telecommunications or electrical lines according to specifications and industry standards.
•Interpret and follow job workprints, utility locates, and work orders to ensure proper cable path and depth.
•Communicate effectively with foremen, spotters, and crew to coordinate plow operations and maintain safety on site.
•Perform daily inspections and preventive maintenance of equipment; report and address any issues.
•Troubleshoot and adapt plowing techniques based on soil conditions, existing infrastructure, or site obstacles.
•Maintain accurate daily logs and documentation of completed work.
•Comply with all OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations at all times.
•Ensure minimal disruption to surrounding environments, including landscaping and existing utilities.
•May assist in trenching, rock sawing, drilling, or manual labor when needed.
•Other duties as requested.
Qualifications
•Proficient with machines such as Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or similar heavy equipment; Quads and track units; Including Rock Saws.
•Solid understanding of utility locating, reading prints, and safe digging practices.
•Familiarity with traffic control, jobsite setup, and damage prevention procedures.
•Ability to operate other equipment (mini-excavator, backhoe, or directional drill) is a plus.
•Communication skills to interact with team members and report issues or updates.
•Safety-conscious mindset to ensure that equipment is operated and handled safely.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities listed qualifies.
•Minimum 2 years of experience operating cable plow equipment in underground utility construction.
•Class A CDL Driver License with Airbrakes required.
•OSHA 10 or 30 Certification preferred.
•First Aid/CPR and Flagger Certification is a plus.
•Proficiency in Rock Sawing is a plus.
Working Conditions
•This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push up to 50 lbs; bend, stoop, kneel, reach, squat twist, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day, and balance at heights up to 6 feet from ground level. In addition, you must have the ability to be on your feet regularly and use hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job. This includes frequently walking on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces, as well as working in confined areas.
•Must be able to climb on and off heavy equipment safely.
•This job requires the ability to perform essential tasks in less than favorable conditions. These may include but are not limited to: Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, sand, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time.
•Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to moving equipment.
Work Hours: The normal work hours for this position are Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, with extended hours and required overtime when needed; May also include overnight and weekend work depending on project schedules.
