Focused Energy is a fusion energy startup with the goal of generating unlimited clean energy to responsibly meet future global demand. With the use and commercialization of laser-induced inertial fusion, a clean and highly efficient power generation technology is coming within reach, suitable to ensure a secure and scalable future energy supply.
We are seeking a Laser Electronics & Optical Technician (LEOT) to support the assembly, integration, testing, and maintenance of advanced laser, optical, and electro-optical systems used in our fusion energy R&D and prototype platforms. This is a highly hands-on role, working closely with laser engineers, optical engineers, and systems engineers to bring complex, high-power laser systems from design into operation.
You’ll play a critical role in ensuring our laser subsystems meet demanding performance, safety, and reliability requirements as we move from experimental setups toward scalable fusion systems.
What you’ll do:
- Assemble, align, and test advanced laser and optical systems, including beam delivery assemblies
- Perform precision optical alignment and verify laser performance (power, wavelength, beam quality, stability)
- Build, wire, and troubleshoot laser electronics, power supplies, drivers, and control subsystems
- Diagnose and resolve issues across optical, electronic, and electro-optical systems in R&D and prototype environments
- Execute preventive maintenance, system upgrades, and calibration to meet performance and safety requirements
- Operate safely with high energy lasers, high-voltage electronics, and controlled lab or cleanroom environments
- Document system configurations, test results, and procedures, and collaborate closely with engineers and scientists
- Must be able to work onsite in our facility in Austin.
- Hands-on experience in Electronics, Photonics, Optics, Laser Technology, or a related field
- Practical experience assembling, aligning, and testing laser and optical systems
- Strong electronics troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read electrical schematics and optical diagrams
- Experience using precision electrical and optical test equipment
- Experience with fiber-laser or high-energy laser systems
- Familiarity with laser safety programs or certification (LSO or equivalent)
- Exposure to CAD drawings, optical design tools, or lab automation systems
- Background in aerospace, defense, semiconductor, medical device, or advanced R&D environments
- Experience working in regulated or safety-critical lab settings
- Innovative Technology & Mission: Be part of a cutting-edge company working on groundbreaking research in clean energy and scientific discovery.
- Career Development: We invest in our people. This is an opportunity to join an early, growing company at the forefront of new technology, where you’ll have the opportunity to develop and grow your career.
- Collaborative Culture: Work with great people in a dynamic, international environment with top-tier scientists, engineers and professionals passionate about solving global challenges.
- Ownership: Take ownership from day 1 and drive impact by making decisions, solving challenges and shaping the future of our company.
- Your Success is our Success: We offer a competitive salary and company ownership in the form of stock options, giving you a direct stake in our success and ownership in what we build together.
- Vacation Days: We support your work-life-balance with flexible leave philosophy.
- Retirement Plan: Matching 401k contributions.
- Events: We organize regular events to foster team bonding, encourage collaboration, and build a strong, supportive company culture. Connect with colleagues across departments, share ideas, and have fun together, both in and outside of the workplace.
