Our Fiber Broadband Services Team is looking for a Fiber Splicing Technician. The Fiber Splicing Technician is responsible for the installation, splicing, testing and maintenance of fiberoptic
cable. This role includes precision fusion splicing of large fiber counts, troubleshooting fiber plant,
construction of aerial plant – to include strand and lashing. The Fiber Splicing Technician must be able to
work independently and alongside Broadband Technicians, Contractors, and other departments to deliver
high-quality, timely results. This position will be part of an on-call rotation and may require weekend, afterhours
or holiday shifts.
Essential Job Duties
Fiber Splicing, Construction, and Installation
- Perform fusion splicing for new construction, distribution automation, maintenance, and repairs.
- Assist line crews and contractors with the building and installation of outside plant fiber
- Install fiber enclosures, PON cabinets, distribution panels, pedestals, and other network equipment.
- Perform routine inspections of fiber infrastructure and proactively mitigate network risks. Document and
- Respond to outages, damage events and fiber cuts. Perform emergency restoration in a timely manner.
- Operate bucket trucks, ladders, and work safely in confined spaces and at aerial communication heights.
- Maintain accurate documentation of installations, test results, and service activity.
- Request support from colleagues or vendors when issues cannot be resolved on site.
- May be required to assist with install or repair of FTTH services for residential/commercial accounts.
- Communicate clearly with members and key personnel throughout installation or repair processes.
- Deliver high-quality customer experience and maintain positive member relationships.
- Assist in training staff on fiber 101 courses.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and participate in required training.
- Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment, such as fusion splicers, OTDRs, bucket trucks, and
splicing trailers.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Highly proficient with fusion splicing. Including large count fiber cables at aerial communication heights or
- Experience with aerial cable construction equipment, such as strand and lashing.
- Experience with pole transfers and make-ready.
- Detailed and accurate documentation for fiber staking sheets, as-builts and redlines.
- Proficient with fiber tools, including fusion splicers, OTDRs, lasher, and locator.
- Strong working knowledge of fiber-optic infrastructure, maintenance, testing, and repair.
- Understanding fiber counts and colors.
- Familiarity with RUS standards and codes.
- Ability to analyze test readings (OTDR, light levels), computer diagnostics, staking sheets, and trouble reports.
- Ability to safely operate bucket trucks, ladders, and perform work in confined spaces.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently or with a team.
- Effective communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
- Solid organizational and time-management abilities.
- Commitment to safety, accuracy, and high-quality workmanship.
- 3+ Years of Experience fiber splicing
- Experience in fiber infrastructure construction
- Working knowledge of RUS standards, codes, and electrical hazard awareness
- Valid Texas Driver’s License and Related Insurance
- Must pass background and drug screening
- The position may be required to work irregular hours, overtime, on-call, and travel within BEC’s
service territory.
Working Conditions:
The work environment varies and can be both indoor and outdoor. The fiber splicing technician will be
exposed to hot, cold, dry, humid, noise, glare, moving objects, working at heights, slippery surfaces,
congested areas, and around sharp edges. They will work under pressure in a fast-paced environment,
performing multiple complex or varied tasks. They will be required to deliver a high-quality product without
compromising standards, all while paying close attention to detail. The fiber splicing technician will be
responsible for directing and controlling the plan of work, following instructions, reading, and working
independently or in a group. Tobacco free office environment.
Physical Requirements:
The individual in this position is required to perform tasks that involve frequent bending forward, reaching
below chest level, elbow flexion/extension, wrist flexion/extension, wrist rotation, twisting/turning/tilting,
crouching/squatting, kneeling, climbing, foot pedal/action. The individual in this role should have the ability to
hear, speak, see colors, have near and far vision, have spatial perception, and have tactile abilities. The
individual in this position must be able to lift up-to 50lbs and climb ladders without a fear of heights.
