Under general supervision, performs entry level work in the design, installation, construction, modification, repair and maintenance of electrical apparatuses, equipment and systems.
Assists in the troubleshooting of circuit faults across a broad range of applications. Assists in the inspection and evaluation of electrical and electronic equipment on a recommended maintenance schedule to ensure its efficient and safe operation; maintains maintenance records on equipment. Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repairs, and/or replacement of electrical motors, motor control centers, light fixtures, electrical controls, and other electrical appliances. Interprets and understands wiring diagrams, blue prints schematics, instructions, and other technical documentation. Assists in the installation, maintenance, repairs, and/or replacement of a broad range of electrical equipment in support of base construction and maintenance activities. Inspects and maintains Alternate Current (AC) generators. Responds to routine and emergency calls for electrical repairs and service as required. Works as scheduled including nights, weekends, and holidays. Completes other job duties as assigned. Master Electricians provide leadership, guidance and direction to subordinate staff.
Knowledge of electrical theory and methods, materials, tools, equipment and systems used in the electrical trade. Knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and regulations pertaining to the electrical trade, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 E and National Electric Code (NEC). Knowledge of the hazards involved in working around energized lines and equipment with high voltage. Knowledge of electric motors, magnetic starters, transformers and over current protective devices. Knowledge of proper installation techniques. Knowledge and application of safe operation of instruments provided for circuit analysis and testing, including power and motor analyzers and similar test equipment standard in the trade. Skills in computer technology including Microsoft Office programs. Strong oral and written communication skills in English. Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in the performance of tasks. Ability to handle conflict and uncertain situations. Ability to display the highest level of workmanship. Ability to interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, maintenance manuals, and assembly instructions. Ability to study and comprehend new technology. Ability to make mathematical computations.
Electrician:
High School Diploma, GED or U.S. Equivalency report, and completion of an Electrical trade school apprenticeship program, or two (2) years of experience in maintenance, installation and repair of electrical systems or related field are required.
Journeyman Electrician:
High School Diploma, GED or U.S. Equivalency report, and completion of an Electrical trade school apprenticeship program and three (3) years of experience in maintenance, installation and repair of electrical systems or related field are required A Journeyman License may substitute for the Electrical trade school program.
Master Electrician:
High School Diploma, GED, or U.S. Equivalency report, and completion of an Electrical trade school program, and (7) years of experience in maintenance, installation and repair of electrical systems or related field are required. A Master Electrician License can substitute for the Electrical trade school program.
Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver’s License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.
In addition to the above:
Electrician: An Electrical Apprentice License or the ability to obtain it within 90 days is required. Journeyman Electrician: A Journeyman License is required.Master Electrician: A State of Texas Master Electrician license is required.
Master Electrician license from other jurisdictions providing comity with Texas may be allowed; however, candidate must acquire a Texas Master Electrician license within12 months in order to remain in the position.
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Overall physical condition to work at floor level or on top of structures at 60 plus feet above ground is required. Must be able to manipulate loads up to 50 lbs. Strenuous physical effort and continuous lifting and moving of heavy test equipment is required.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions and high voltage exposure.Must be able to work in elevated places. Must be able to work with a self-contained breathing apparatus weighing 45 lbs., or respirator. Must pass the annual fit test requirements for use of a self-contained breathing apparatus and/or respirator. Must be able to enter and perform duties in a confined space.
In addition to any and all other qualifications required for employment stated under the Brownsville P.U.B Personnel Policies and Procedures Policy No. 39:
- Prohibit the hiring of any person who is related to BPUB Executive Management within the third degree of Consanguinity or second degree by Affinity; and
- Based on certain prohibitions of the Charter and Statute on nepotism, no person can be hired who shall be related to any member of the Board of Directors or City Commission within the third degree of consanguinity or second degree by affinity.
