Section 1 – Position Summary
The Electrical Apprentice assists other electricians in diagnosing, repairing, installing, testing, and maintaining high, medium, and low voltage electrical equipment and hard wired and wireless telecommunication systems. This position assists in maintaining systems up to 25,000 volts. This position will support multiple facilities with varying processes, equipment, and functional requirements. This position is given specific instruction, and work is performed under direct supervision.
Section 2 – Major Responsibilities
1. Assists and supports electricians in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of low, medium, and high voltage wiring systems.
2. Assists and supports electricians in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of motors, generators, fans, and other various equipment.
3. Assists and supports electricians in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of overhead power distribution systems, power sub-stations, variable frequency drives, and motor control centers.
4. Assists and supports electricians in the installation, maintenance, diagnosing and repair of air conditioning, refrigerant systems, chillers, boilers, and lighting systems.
5. Demonstrates technical aptitude with low, medium, and high voltage circuits.
6. Applies principles and practices of NEC, NFPA, OSHA, NLSC, including electrical tables and electrical codes, work methods, tools and operation of high voltage and emergency equipment.
7. Performs preventive and predictive maintenance and maintains tools, parts, equipment and materials requirements and inventory for assigned projects.
8. Performs basic mathematical calculations.
9. Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, plans, and manufacturers’ specifications.
10. Operates man lift, bucket truck, and all associated electrical maintenance equipment.
11. Learns and applies proper safety procedures and protocols in all work environments.
12. Maintains a clean and organized work area at all times.
13. Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve skill levels.
14. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and public relations.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
Section 3 – Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
1. Must have the ability to comprehend, carry out and administer written and oral instruction.
2. Must possess knowledge of basic electrical principles and concepts.
3. Normal visual color discrimination.
4. Strong willingness to learn and develop skills in the electrical trade.
5. Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
6. Physical ability to perform duties such as lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
7. Willingness to work overtime and call outs as needed.
8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
9. Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.
Section 4 – Education and Experience
1. Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.
2. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
3. Must apply for and maintain a valid TDLR apprentice electrician license.
Section 5 – Environmental Factors, Activity Levels and Equipment
This position requires continuous physical exertion often of a strenuous nature. Lifts or pulls/pushes 50 pounds on a daily basis and up to 100 pounds on a weekly basis in order to repair and service various electrical components, while using various hand tools and equipment.
Working conditions include exposure to high voltage electricity, frequent exposure to inclement weather, wastewater, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined space hazards with offensive fumes, excessive noise, heavy traffic, and animals, snakes, and poisonous insects.
May be requested to climb water tanks and water towers or perform confined space entries as required.
Hand and power tools including electrical testing equipment, impact drills, saws, emergency lighting equipment and safety equipment.
May be required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment. Also operates a company vehicle on a daily basis.
Will be required to work hours other than regular schedule such as short notice/unscheduled overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and rotating shifts.
