The Transportation Lead Driver is responsible for the effective implementation of Logistics processes and ensuring they are being followed by all personnel while also communicating and addressing daily tasks needed for the department to function successfully.
This position reports to the Transportation Manager but will work closely with the Plant Management team and other Divert functions to receive any prioritized daily direction needed.
This position is a safety-sensitive position and requires a clear mind and diligence. The employee has the responsibility for his/her safety as well as the safety of others.
- Perform the necessary CDL Class A driving needs for the company
- Comply with all DOT, FMCSA regulations and in-house rules, procedures and policies.
- Complete a daily truck log via Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to record reports of mileage covered at the end of each day.
- Complete daily inspections of the vehicle(s) at the beginning (pre-trip) and end (post-trip) of the shift via ELD and report any problems or damage to management.
- Adequately perform all the physical functions necessary of a truck driver (e.g. connecting/disconnecting air and electrical lines, ensure landing gear is set, ensure trailer king pin is engaged to truck, etc.) to ensure any trailer loads/cargo are safely transported.
- Install tire chains as necessary/required per DOT or state requirements dependent on the weather.
- Complete all necessary trailer swaps, all trailer types at the facility, in order to optimize business operations.
- Conduct daily, open communication with Divert Logistics and Operations team members before departing from our facility each day to ensure alignment between departments in order to not cause any business disruption.
- Retrieve and turn in all necessary paperwork (e.g. Outgoing BOL, Incoming BOL, etc.) to the proper team members/Customer at the given Origin/Destination.
- Fuel the tractors as necessary in order to get to and from each Origin/Destination via the Fuel Card supplied by the company. In an emergency, or certain unforeseen situation(s), a personal payment method for fuel is acceptable if needed but management needs to be contacted for approval and all receipts should be saved for proper reimbursement.
- Observe and report equipment or mechanical failures immediately.
- Manage routes and routines so they proceed in the most efficient way possible.
- Responsible for leadership tasks that drive growth and positive change
- Assist in the creation and implementation of processes to improve logistic safety culture and practices (i.e. Training, PPE, SOPs, Near Misses, Weekly Topics, Fleet walks, ride a-longs, etc.)
- Implement and ensure completion of Logistics Procedures with the broader team and partner with the Plant/Logistics Manager to conduct specific, necessary follow-ups with employees to ensure these processes are being followed to successfully drive change and/or improve the company’s bottom line.
- Assist in the completion of our logistics Planned Maintenance objectives, including the utilization of Maintenance Connection, and performing some maintenance activities in-house.
- Properly manage and escalate the needs of the Logistics assets in order for them to stay in good condition (i.e. Truck cleaning inside/outside, dry van trailer cleaning, etc.)
- Daily point of contact for logistics items/follow-ups to properly prioritize and communicate including but not limited to: Truck/trailer repairs, drivers schedule efficacy, outlet issues, etc.
- Perform daily and weekly scheduling/dispatching needs, including implementing OT when necessary for the business, and communicate to all necessary personnel, including Divert employees and customers.
- Responsible for having operational knowledge of how Operations and Logistics function together in order to make proper decisions and escalate items when necessary to avoid any business disruption.
- Responsible for conducting on-site interviews for prospective drivers.
- Responsible for executing driver training needs at our Divert site(s).
- Participate with Transportation Operations Manager to conduct driver reviews processes.
- Assist in auditing drivers hours to ensure schedules are followed, drivers are efficient and OT is only accessed when needed.
- Class A CDL required
- Minimum of 3 years Experience in a driver position
- Mechanical aptitude and Experience with the following mechanical duties is required: DOT preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting/repair of electric/pneumatic/hydraulic/mechanical systems and components.
- Experience in transportation operations is highly preferred
- Willing to perform multiple hauls/routes depending on what the current business needs are
- Willing to complete overnight hauls on occasion / as needed depending on business needs
- Willing to perform duties occasionally that are outside of the scope of just driving work – example using a forklift
- $35/hour includes night and weekend differential pay
This position is overtime eligible over 40 hours / week, overtime will be expected as necessary in order to protect the business from any disruption.
