Job Summary
The primary role of a Shaft Miner is to perform, while maintaining fall arrest standards and working on a suspended work platform, various tasks such as, the installation of vent tubing and mine services (air, water and pumping lines), shaft lining installation which includes pouring concrete into the shaft wall forms, installation of shaft steel, and minor construction.
General RESPONSIBILITIES
- Set up and operate drills and drilling machines to produce a designated pattern of blasting holes
- Load explosives, set fuses, and detonate explosives to produce desired blasting patterns and rock fragmentation
- Install shaft lining components, including cement and grout, in accordance with blueprints and engineering specifications
- Perform duties required to ensure safety and to support the shaft advance, such as scaling loose rock from walls, extending and installing air and water pipes, operating muck loading machinery and inspecting mine shafts
- Scale loose rocks, help facilitate the mucking of the shaft bottom using buckets and install ground support to stabilize rock mass and ensure safety.
- Receive instructions or directives from Shift Supervisors and Captain to coordinate day to day ground control requirements
- Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner
- Must be able to follow proper procedure to ensure safety and to control equipment damage

- Having the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
- Following Redpath Canada Limited health and safety standards and systems, including the Five Point Safety System and the Cardinal Rules, and reporting any unsafe acts or conditions
- Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment required in the performance of the work.
- Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet.
- Comply with the Act and Mining Regulations that apply to the work area.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- Ontario Hard Rock Underground Common Core – Full Basic (or other provincial equivalent)
- Required Specialty Module: U0084 (or other provincial equivalent)
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in shaft mining
- Ability to multi task and work effectively
- Ability to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently
- Respectful of cultural differences
