What is a CNC Operator?
The CNC Machinist operates and setup computer numerical control machines to fabricate parts, loads parts in the machine, cycles machine and detects malfunctions in machine operations, such as worn or damaged cutting tools. Adjustment of the machine to control speed, material feed and path of the cut, as well as make sure the machines are set up properly, working well, and producing quality product. Review the finished product to ensure it is defect-free and ready for the next step in production. Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work environment.
- Read production orders, gauges, interpret blueprints and material specifications
- Translate the requirements of detailed part drawings into measurements for production
- Regularly performs milling, turning, drilling, tapping, de-burring and sawing
- Inspect with the appropriate gauging technique and keep defective material report current
- Perform traceability marking and documentation
- Keep appropriate documents current and accurate
- Operation of overhead crane and forklift
- Basic equipment and tooling upkeep, shop housekeeping and chip disposal
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean, orderly condition and follow safety procedures
- Assists in other work areas to perform fabrication
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Prior experience as a CNC Operator or a completion of a CNC program from a technical or trade school
- Strong math skills, including decimals and fraction
- Extensive knowledge of machine maintenance and operation
- Mechanically inclined with basic machinery and tooling knowledge
- Ability to read, write and communicate well
- Interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures
- Limited computer knowledge
- Regularly required to talk or hear, frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
- Frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling objects that are 50 pounds or less
- Exposure to fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and moving mechanical parts
- Noise level in the shop may be loud
