Job Summary
Support reliability compliance for AEP’s Transmission System Operations group, specifically NERC reliability compliance standards as applied by Reliability First (RF), the Midwest Reliability Organization (MRO), and the Texas Regional Entity (TRE), and the Transmission System Operations standards promulgated by State Authorities. Facilitate compliance by coordinating with Generation. Commercial Operations, Distribution and Corporate Shared Services (IT and Telecommunications). Interface with Generation, Commercial Operations, Distribution, Corporate Shared Services, and Regulatory Services in the standards development/review process. Serve as a liaison with the Policy and RTO groups in Regulatory Services and ENRA on reliability standards issues.
Job Description
What you’ll do:
•Lead, facilitate, and coordinate NERC work activities for Transmission System Operations (TSO). Work with process experts to ensure an understanding of, and compliance with, NERC Standards. Coordinate compliance efforts and build relationships between TSO and other AEP business units.
•Interface with regulatory bodies and draft responses to reliability compliance inquiries that are aligned and consistent with AEP policy and strategy. Lead the team and participate in periodic audits performed by the Regional Entities (REs) to assess AEP compliance with the full range of NERC reliability standards; Perform internal audits on all controls and NERC focused automation processes.
•Work to develop new processes to reduce the risk of non-compliance with the NERC reliability compliance to drive Operational Excellence.
•Work with technical writers and process experts to document compliance processes and ensure that processes meet compliance requirements. Work closely with the process experts to ensure that each team adheres to the NERC Reliability Standards and that necessary evidence is generated.
•Coordinate the preparation of responses to requests for information (RFIs) on NERC reliability standards. Participate in RE and Industry sponsored groups/workshops (along with key business unit/operating company employees) during the standard development process to ensure appropriate systems are in place to track and monitor newly developed NERC standards.
•Educate and communicate with stakeholders on the impact of newly developed NERC standards or emerging issues impacting the business unit/operating company. Manage the staff and the processes supporting the applicable TSO compliance standard requirements.
•This position has the responsibility for implementing, supporting, and coordinating the NERC processes, policies, and procedures within TSO. Review vendor related tools and internally developed software systems to track and monitor whether or not the tools are meeting the compliance needs of the NERC standards, as well as any state standards that apply.
•Work proactively to develop controls with a focus on high severity and repeatedly violated requirements. Serve as a liaison for TSO with the Policy and RTO groups in Regulatory Services to provide input on solutions and process improvements to reliability issues raised by federal, regional, and state agencies/commissions.
•Utilize IT tools and other web-based software to automate manually intensive processes and tasks.
•Oversee the management and development of the NERC compliance teams. Ensure culture attributes are demonstrated and that all compliance requirements are properly covered. Report out to and inform leadership of potential NERC compliance issues and the health of the program.
•Implement actions proposed in mitigation plans, evaluating Energy Delivery tools for adherence to all NERC standard requirements, automating manually intensive processes/procedures; and being heavily involved in NERC compliance process improvement efforts.

Education:
•Bachelor’s degree in business administration, engineering, or related field.
Experience:
•Minimum of 7 years in progressively responsible positions. Working and leadership experience in AEP’s Transmission System Operations organization preferred.
In addition:
•Strong knowledge in Transmission System Operations systems and familiarity with the NERC reliability compliance standards /legislative environment and compliance filing/legislative proceedings internal and external of AEP at the federal, regional, and state level is preferred. The individual must be detail oriented and demonstrate a passion for operational excellence. A solid understanding of the business unit/operating company systems is preferred. Strong communication ability, issue resolution, organization skills, and facilitation skills are essential.
•The individual will be expected to: Demonstrate leadership ability, as well as the ability to efficiently and effectively build and sustain strong alliances on various levels, both within AEP (field to senior management), and with external parties, including commission staff members.
•Remain knowledgeable on current and emerging electric utility issues impacting the business unit/operating company/corporation.
•Demonstrate creativity, vision, and expert level problem-solving skills. Initiate solutions to complex issues, promote professionalism when influencing and/or managing others on compliance, legislative, and policy issues, and demonstrate a strong knowledge of network channels within AEP, professional organizations and regulatory agencies.
