The EHS Director is responsible for setting the strategic vision and leading the actions required to achieve world-class Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) performance across the organization. This role directs, develops, and oversees all EHS policies, procedures, and programs for multiple locations. The Director designs and implements effective systems that ensure regulatory compliance while fostering an engaging, proactive, and zero-incident safety culture throughout all areas of the organization.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure organizational policies and procedures adhere to local, state and federal EHS regulations (OSHA, DOT, EPA) at all locations.
- Designs and implements systems and programs that promote a proactive safety culture and drive engagement of all associates at every level of the organization.
- Designs and implements an EHS Management System to provide guidance and approach at each facility.
- Responsible for establishing EHS objectives and targets that drive world class EHS performance.
- Determines appropriate leading and lagging indicators to track performance.
- Ensures the proper internal and external communication systems and procedures are in place to allow pertinent EHS information to be readily available and easily understandable for all interested parties.
- Responsible for creating a system to maintain all applicable EHS documentation for the appropriate retention periods, ensuring that each facility in the organization is continuously audit ready.
- Ensures that there is an effective system and procedure in place for all associates to report incidents and safety observations/ concerns.
- Responsible for implementing a system to track and ensure completion of EHS related actions resulting from incidents, observations, and/or assessments.
- Responsible for capturing and evaluating impactful EHS data to identify areas of improvement
- Responsible for developing an effective training program that identifies and implements relevant EHS training topics for associates at all levels of the organization.
- Works with cross functional leaders/ teams to develop effective initiatives and campaigns that promote personal ownership, self-awareness, and hazard recognition.
- Establishes a process to systematically assess and reduce hazards/risk at all levels of the operation.
- Develops and facilitates an internal EHS audit/assessment program that drives compliance and promotes a zero incident safety culture.
- Develops a collaborative process to execute hazard/risk reduction projects and initiatives identified from key EHS data and audits/ assessments.
- Responsible for managing EHS budget/ allocating funding and resources to appropriate areas for risk/ hazard reduction.
- Responsible for the implementation of an impactful safety GEMBA walk process that reinforces Mission Zero concepts (Reinforces compliance and culture).
- Implements a systematic process for conducting incident investigations to identify root cause and appropriate short and long term corrective actions, ensuring actions are implemented and sustained properly.
- Establishes a process to communicate best practices and lessons learned as they apply to all areas of organization.
- Responsible for implementing and overseeing EHS related committees and/or teams to ensure that activities are engaging and impactful.
- Collaborates with cross functional leaders/teams to ensure all agreed policies and procedures are clearly understood and enforced consistently throughout the organization.
- Responsible for implementing a Management of Change process to identify all EHS related impacts resulting from any significant changes or additions to operations.
- Implement and oversee the execution of a compliance calendar for each site, ensuring all applicable requirements are identified.
- Facilitate 3rd party audits/ inspections to validate EHS compliance programs.
- Responsible for the development and progression of dedicated EHS staff within the organization.
- Bachelor’s degree in HSE field or equivalent number of years of experience.
- 5 years of HSE related experience with 5 years of management experience.
- Technologically savvy and experience working with Microsoft Office products and Windows-based applications
- Highly articulate verbal and written communication skills, professional appearance and presentation style.
- Has strong HSE & business presence
- Ability to clearly convey information and ideas with all levels of the organization.
- Creative, innovative and strategic thinker with proven problem resolution skills and process improvement techniques.
- Highly motivated self-starter, able to prioritize projects, accept responsibility and follow through without close supervision.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize and balance multiple projects.

- Strong analytical ability to gather and interpret information, and develop, recommend and implement solutions.
- Ability to monitor and evaluate associate performance, establish work priorities, delegate tasks, and train associates in proper policies, procedures and practices.

- Ability to manage and develop strategic HSE initiatives.

- Experience implementing new HSE policies and procedures across multiple locations.
- Proven work experience as a multi-site HSE manager or a similar role.
- Thorough knowledge of HSE functionality and management.
- Thorough understanding of hazard analysis and job safety analysis.
- Solid understanding of project management procedures.
- Solid knowledge of machine guarding principals and requirements.
- Oversees all associates assigned to the area. Responsible for hiring, retention, development and performance management for the area
- Must be able to work outside normal business hours/days as needed
- Must be able to travel occasionally and work at an outside location
