The Safety Specialist I is responsible for implementing and maintaining the WSSC Water Safety Program. This position provides onsite day-to-day support at various locations. This includes conducting incident prevention inspections, observations and investigations, as well as safety and health training in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Conducts safety audits on various types of WSSC Water activities and facilities and various required safety training courses
- Conducts safety training courses and on-the-job training based on regulatory requirements or WSSC Water policy and/or procedures
- Maintains training information and records n safety training database
- Reports health concerns to the Occupational Health Nurse; coordinates preventative measures accordingly
- Conducts and/or reviews accident investigations to determine accident causes; makes recommendations on corrective action to prevent similar types of accident(s) in the future
- Conducts fire and other emergency evacuation drills
- Reviews warehouse material specifications for compliance with safety & health requirements
- Reviews monthly fire extinguisher inspection records and annual fire evacuation drill records
- Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business
- Creates and distributes safety communications
- Coordinates all safety-related activities at assigned locations
- Provides any safety-related support requested
- Responds to medical or other safety emergencies; including after-hours and weekends
- Assists managers and supervisors in implementing Accident Prevention and Health Programs to comply with the WSSC Water Safety Program
- Periodically revises safety and health manual and safety SoPs
- Provides administrative support during the DOT physical activities and random drug and alcohol testing activities
- Performs related duties as assigned
- Thorough knowledge of occupational safety concepts, requirements and methods to accomplish set goals
- Considerable knowledge of the OSHA, MOSH, NIOSH, EPA, DOT, NIOSH, ACGIH, Safety and Health regulations and standards
- Ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend solutions within the parameters of industrial principles
- Ability to make timely judgments and recommendations on safety-related matters, i.e., excavations, construction, vehicle operation, use of chemicals, etc.
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Bachelor’s degree
- 3+ years experience with environmental safety and health programs- High School diploma or equivalent - 7+ years experience with environmental health and & safety programs
