X-energy is looking for professionals to join the Technology team in the role of Manager, Computer Numerical Control Workshop. This role combines hands-on CNC machining expertise with leadership and management responsibilities to maintain an efficient, safe, and productive workshop environment. The workshop manager will be responsible for all activities in the workshop ensuring safe operations, work planning, training of new staff and technical interaction with X-energy engineering staff to support design for manufacturing optimization.
- CNC Machining
- CAM programming using CAM software such as Fusion 360, Mastercam or similar CAM software tools.
- Program, set up, and operation of CNC machines (mills, lathes, and other equipment) to produce precision parts for prototype equipment.
- Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD/CAM files and develop accurate and cost-effective machining processes.
- Perform quality control checks using precision measuring tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, CMM, Laser scanning etc.) to ensure parts meet specifications.
- Optimize machining processes to improve efficiency and reduce waste and cost.
- Maintain and troubleshoot CNC equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Workshop Management
- Supervise, plan and coordinate the activities of workshop staff, including machinists, technicians, and support personnel.
- Schedule and prioritize production tasks to meet project deadlines for prototype equipment.
- Manage inventory of raw materials, tools, and consumables to ensure uninterrupted production.
- Implement and enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with OSHA and other regulatory standards.
- Oversee maintenance and calibration of all workshop equipment to minimize downtime.
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams to provide feedback on manufacturability and prototype development.
- Leadership and Administration
- Train and mentor workshop staff on CNC programming, machining techniques, and safety procedures.
- Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for workshop processes.
- Monitor workshop performance metrics, such as production output, quality, and efficiency, and report to senior management.
- Manage workshop budget, including equipment purchases, maintenance costs, and staffing expenses.
- Foster a culture of safety, continuous improvement, encouraging innovation and teamwork.
- Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
- Work environment: Work is performed in a workshop setting with exposure to CNC machines, tools, and manufacturing processes. Adherence to safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), is mandatory.
- Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to talk, hear, walk, and move consistently throughout the day. May be subject to dust, noises, and vibrations from generating machinery equipment. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Typically, ten years of experience as a CNC machinist, with at least two years in a supervisory or management role.
- Minimum of five years’ hands on experience in CAM programing, machine operations and setup.
- Proven experience in manufacturing prototype equipment or precision components.
- Expertise in CNC programming (G-code, M-code) and operation of multi-axis CNC machines.
- Proficiency with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX, SolidWorks).
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
Location: This role will initially work in our Rockville, MD office on a Hybrid schedule (3 days a week in office), but it will transition to 5 days a week in office at our Frederick, MD facility in the future.
Travel Expectations: Up to 10% as needed
Hours: Standard office schedule is 8:00am-5:00pm ET, Mon-Fri
