Duties
A major portion of the incumbent’s assignments will consist of calibration and repair of mechanical and electrical instruments which measure pressure, temperature, vacuum, draft, liquid level, flow, weight, position, vibration, humidity, speed, eccentricity, gas composition, and density; the calibration and repair of automatic control devices which regulate liquid level, feedwater flow, furnace draft, furnace combustion, superheat temperature, and reheat temperature; and the adjustment and maintenance of program controllers.
A minor portion of the incumbent’s assignments will consist of the calibration and repair of miscellaneous plant instruments and control devices.
In the performance of these duties inspects, diagnoses trouble, tests, disconnects, removes, disassembles, repairs, reassembles (installing new parts as required or repairing defective parts), reinstalls, connects, calibrates, checks, and returns to service instruments including actuating connections and control equipment. The instruments and their actuating and control equipment may be electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, thermal, or any combination of these.
As assigned, the incumbent trains apprentices.
Qualifications
This position requires a thorough knowledge of the construction and operation of various types of instruments and associated control devices and the ability to calibrate and repair satisfactorily this type of equipment. It also requires a general knowledge of the processes which these instruments measure and control.
The incumbent should have a high school education and must have completed an instrument mechanic apprenticeship program or its acceptable equivalent.
Supervision Received
The incumbent works under the supervision of an engineer who is responsible for the maintenance, techniques of inspection, and necessary adjustments of instruments and controls relating to the operation of steam generators, turbines, and associated auxiliary equipment.
The engineer makes work assignments, reviews adequacy of completed work, and gives technical advice and special instructions in connection with the servicing of new types of instruments, the more complex control systems, and unusual maintenance problems.
