We’re looking for a Payroll Lead who’s passionate about process accuracy, compliance, and people management to oversee our payroll operations and ensure our employees are paid correctly, on time, and in accordance with all legal and internal policies.
Job Description
As our Payroll Lead, you’ll be responsible for leading all payroll functions at Blackwood. This includes processing multi-state payrolls, ensuring tax compliance, improving internal systems and workflows, and serving as the go-to person for all payroll-related inquiries.
You’ll work cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and external vendors, and play a key role in maintaining a great employee experience.
Responsibilities:
•Own the end-to-end payroll process for U.S. employees in multiple States, both salaried and hourly.
•Ensure accuracy and compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll laws.
•Manage weekly payroll cycles, including reconciliation, garnishments, and reporting.
•Partner with HR to manage new hires, terminations, and compensation changes.
•Serve as primary contact for payroll audits, tax filings, and year-end reporting (e.g., W-2s).
•Drive process improvements and system optimizations (e.g., working with Rippling)
•Develop internal controls and documentation for all payroll operations.
•Respond to employee payroll inquiries with clarity, empathy, and discretion.
•Monitor payroll-related legislation and update internal practices accordingly.
Qualifications
•Deep understanding of payroll compliance, tax reporting, and labor law.
•Proficient in Excel and HRIS/payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Workday, Paylocity, or Rippling).
•Exceptional attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive data confidentially.
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to explain payroll topics clearly to non-experts.
•CPP certification is a strong plus.
