POSITION SUMMARY:
Fabrication Welding Trainer will lead the onboarding and basic welding development of entry-level structural steel welders. This role requires a personable, disciplined leader who can uphold SME Steel’s standards while making unbiased, business-driven decisions to support the team’s success and long-term company performance and goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Collaborate with HR to attract, assess, and select candidates for entry-level welding positions and all other open positions withing the Pocatello facility.
•Conduct interviews, practical evaluations, and onboarding in a fair and consistent manner
•Maintain a neutral, objective approach ensuring hiring decisions are based solely on qualifications, performance, and current business needs
•Promote a professional and inclusive work environment during onboarding and during their time in the training department.
•Deliver structured hands-on training in Flux-Cored (FCAW), Metal-Cored (MCAW), Gas-Shielded Metal Cored (GMAW-C) Welding processes.
•Teach reading of blueprints and welding symbols, as well as proper use of fabrication tool.
•Reinforce SME Steel’s safety, quality, and production expectations
•Provide constructive feedback based on observed performance and objective criteria to the plant manager
•Mentor new hires, support to be successful, and adapt the culture.
•Track progress, certify their readiness for production, and recommend advancement based on clear consistent data that is collected during their time in the training department
•Performs other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to perform each essential duty daily.
•5+ years of structural steel welding experience, with leadership or training background, SME Steel experience standard preferred.
•Clear understanding of industry standards, drawings, symbols, and SME inspection processes.
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills with professional manners.
•Proven ability to coach and develop entry-level employees in a respectful, non-biased way
•Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel.
•Familiar with the Tekla EPM Go program.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. •Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 65 pounds occasionally.
•Must be able to stand, kneel, bend, twist, and reach for extended periods.
•Physically fit to work in an industrial environment and tolerate exposure to varying physical conditions.
•Must be able to work extended hours when necessary.
•Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate tools, equipment, and safety devices.
•Tolerance to loud noises, vibrations, dust, heat, and fumes within a fabrication shop environment.
•Ability to wear required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) includes safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, high visibility clothing, and hearing protection.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
•Industrial warehouse and manufacturing environment with heavy machinery, and overhead cranes.
•Strict adherence to safety procedures and use of PPE is mandatory at all times.
•Frequent interaction with production staff, supervisors, safety personnel, and quality control teams.
•Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, depending on seasonal conditions.
