Reporting to the Manager of Measurement & Verification, the Field Metering Engineering Team Lead oversees all field metering activities supporting the M&V department. This includes directing and supervising a team of MoveUP Technology Solutions Specialists who install, maintain and remove temporary metering and data collection devices at customer sites.
* Develop work plans, allocate field team resources, and monitor progress to meet project timelines and quality standards.
* Act as the primary technical contact for all field metering activities.
* Oversee purchasing, testing, and installation of field metering equipment for energy management projects at customer facilities, including temporary power/energy meters, current loggers, lighting loggers, data loggers, temperature sensors and other transducers.
* Design custom temporary field metering devices and enclosures and secure CSA or other regulatory approvals.
* Ensure compliance with BC Hydro M&V plans, IPMVP protocols, and regulatory requirements for measurement accuracy.
* Update and implement comprehensive safety plans and manuals for all field activities, including hazard assessments and mitigation strategies.
* Conduct regular safety briefings and Safe Work Observations with the field team to ensure adherence to BC Hydro’s safety policies.
* Prepare and submit safety reports, incident investigations, and corrective action plans as required.
* Collaborate with M&V Analysts, Engineers, Product Managers, Key Account Managers, and customer representatives to align metering activities with project objectives.
* Communicate technical findings and recommendations to internal teams and external partners.
* Identify opportunities to improve field metering processes, tools, and technologies.
* Support training initiatives and knowledge sharing within the team.
* Review metering data for use in energy savings calculations and reporting. Validate and correct when necessary.
* A degree in electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline relevant to analyzing commercial and industrial electrical energy use.
* Registered, or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
* Strong knowledge of AC/DC power systems up to 600V and all related safety practices.
* In-depth understanding of three-phase metering principles, including phasor relationships for two-element, 2½-element, and three-element configurations. Ability to apply these concepts to ensure accurate measurement and troubleshooting.
* Expertise in advanced test, measurement, and analytical instrumentation systems, including high-accuracy meters, current and potential transformers (CTs/PTs), and data loggers. Demonstrated ability to oversee installation, commissioning, and calibration procedures. Strong understanding of metering system integration, data quality assurance, and troubleshooting methodologies.
* 10+ years of related engineering experience, including exposure to electric utility energy efficiency, electrification, and capacity-focused programs.
* Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including handling large datasets, creating charts and pivot tables, and using statistical analysis tools.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word for report writing and PowerPoint for presentations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Access for use and maintenance of a field equipment inventory database.
In addition, the following experience is considered an asset:
* Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP) and/or Performance Measurement and Verification Analyst (PMVA) certification.
* Experience with low-voltage electrical power distribution systems, motor control centres, starters, and variable frequency drives.
* Knowledge of mechanical systems such as fans, pumps, compressors, HVAC, boilers, refrigeration and Building Automation Systems (BAS) systems.
* Understanding of industrial technologies and processes in sectors such as Solid Wood Products, Pulp & Paper, Mining, Food & Beverage, Chemicals, and Oil & Gas.
* Knowledge of lighting fixtures, lamps, and lighting control systems.
* Experience with metering devices for mechanical parameters (temperature sensors, flow meters, thermal energy meters) and other utilities (steam, water).
* Knowledge and use of utility billing analysis software (e.g., Abraxas Metrix/Option C, ECAM, RETScreen®).
* Working knowledge or experience with programming, statistical analysis platforms and data visualization tools (e.g. SAS, R, JMP, Tableau, Python, VBA, PowerBI).
