The Maintenance Supervisor for the Shovel & Drill department is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and reliable maintenance of electric shovels, and large blasthole drills used in open-pit copper mining. This role provides leadership to maintenance technicians, and welders, coordinates planned and unplanned work, ensures compliance with maintenance standards, and supports continuous improvement to maximize equipment availability and performance.
- Champion a strong safety culture; enforce company safety policies, MSHA regulations, and environmental standards.
- Conduct daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, field audits, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
- Ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures, equipment isolation, and safe work practices.
- Supervise day-to-day mechanical and electrical maintenance for large rotary drills, electric rope shovels, and support equipment.
- Prioritize, schedule, and assign work orders in coordination with the planning department.
- Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities to ensure maximum equipment availability.
- Ensure completion and accuracy of maintenance documentation in the SAP system.
- Participate in root-cause analyses for major failures and support long-term corrective actions.
- Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance management for maintenance technicians, welders, and contractors.
- Coordinate training and skills development to keep the team current with OEM procedures and evolving technology.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and accountability.
- Communicate daily with Mine Operations, Engineering, and Planning teams to align maintenance priorities with production goals.
- Manage equipment downtime, troubleshooting issues, and support rapid response to field breakdowns.
- Coordinate with vendors and OEM representatives for major repairs, rebuilds, and technical support.
- Ensure proper use of parts, materials, tools, and consumables, support inventory control.
- Assist with annual budget development and cost-control initiatives.
- Recommend improvements to maintenance processes, tooling, and equipment reliability.
- Must be proficient with MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
- Strong interpersonal skills in working with crews.
- Applicants must have good communications skills (oral and written).
- Requires the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and emails for documentation purposes.
- High School Diploma or GED
- 5+ years of experience in heavy mobile equipment maintenance, preferably in open-pit mining.- Strong technical knowledge of electric shovels, rotary drills, and mining support equipment.
- Demonstrated experience with a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) and maintenance work management processes.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Technical diploma or degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance or equivalent experience.
- Experience with P&H/Komatsu, Epiroc, or similar equipment.
- Mine-site environment; exposure to noise, dust, weather, and large moving equipment.
- Requires field presence, climbing on equipment, and use of PPE.
- Rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and on-call work may be required.
