Senior Data Architect - Hybrid The Opportunity
The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently seeking a Senior Data Architect to join the Information Management Technology (IMT) branch. The Senior Data Architect leads the design and delivery of scalable, secure, and business-aligned data architecture across multiple projects. In this strategic role, you will guide data architects and modelers, ensuring alignment with enterprise modeling standards and semantic consistency.
In this role you will collaborate with Solution Architects and Product Owners to translate business requirements into effective data solutions, while working with the Data Practice Leads to drive governance, standardization, integration and the evolution of enterprise architecture practices.
This is a blended role: part hands-on architecture and modeling, part mentorship and coordination, and part strategic alignment with the broader enterprise data ecosystem.
What your day-to-day will look like:
- Lead data architecture efforts with Product Owners and Solution Architects to deliver scalable, secure solutions aligned with business goals.
- Translate requirements into data models that support both operational systems and analytics.
- Advise on architecture options to ensure consistency with application, infrastructure, and business needs.
- Design and implement secure data access mechanisms for downstream APIs and services.
- Develop secure data sharing strategies for internal and external exchange.
- Conduct data migration assessments and create implementation plans for legacy modernization and cloud transitions.
- Align project data models with enterprise standards by working closely with the Enterprise Data Modeler.
- Define and promote best practices for data modeling, integration, naming conventions, and metadata management.
- Mentor Data Architects and Engineers to ensure quality and adherence to standards.
- Maintain comprehensive architecture documentation for traceability and audit readiness.
- Ensure consistency and integrity across development, testing, and production environments.
- Collaborate with developers and architects to uphold data quality, validation, and automation best practices.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in data architecture and design for enterprise solutions. - 5+ years supporting Agile delivery with adaptive data modeling.- Proven ability to translate business needs into scalable data models.
- Expertise in full-stack data architecture (conceptual, logical, physical).
- Strong SQL skills; hands-on with Microsoft SQL Server and Azure Cosmos DB.
- Expert in IDERA ER/Studio for data modeling.
- Experience with cloud-based data architectures and CI/CD pipelines.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices.
- Proficient in hybrid data environments (relational + NoSQL/document stores).- Skilled in distributed data modeling and cloud-native schema design.
- Strong background in metadata management and domain standardization.
- Experience defining and enforcing data standards and practices.
- Proficient with ETL/ELT, API-based sharing, and event-driven architectures.
- Experience supporting governance: lineage, data quality, MDM, and reference data management.
- Track record designing and delivering secure data sharing solutions.
- Experience in regulated industries (e.g., oil & gas, government).
- Effective leader and mentor with strong communication skills.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
