The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Reporting to the Manager, Project Engineering, we are looking for a Project Engineer to provide engineering support for transmission projects, system and customer connection projects from transmission facility design, power system modeling, metering, advanced power system studies, and cost estimate perspective.
In this position, you will play a critical role in transmission projects in the development of AESO functional specification, facility scopes, and the review/creation of PDUPs (modeling information). You will bring a solid understanding of the power system including transmission, distribution, and generation. You will also work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders and actively participate in technical discussions and initiatives.

- Participate in all types of projects including system, customer connection, behind the fence (BTF) and Competitive Procurement, and special technology.
- Develop facility scope for high level cost estimate purposes & functional specification of transmission projects.
- Create and review Project Data Update Packages (PDUP) for modeling using the PSS/E format.
- Develop Needs Identification Document (NID) Specification for system projects.
- Review service proposals & advanced technical study reports.
- Provide engineering support in all project stages & provide project status updates.
- Review transmission costs & transmission project energization packages.
- Develop revenue metering solutions as required.
- Gain cross-functional knowledge in engineering, planning, Tariff and Operation to make transmission projects successful.
- Interface with transmission facility owners, generation facility owners, distribution facility owners and project developers.
- Make engineering decisions in consideration with Tariff and Transmission Regulation.
- Prepare technical decision record as required.
- Facilitate the technical variance request from market participants.
- Conduct technical discussions and alignments with rule/requirement owners and domain specialists within the AESO.
- B.Sc. Electrical Engineering.
- Registered with or eligible to be registered with APEGA (P.Eng.).
- 5+ years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry with experience in substation design and power system studies.- Familiarity with transmission major equipment, equipment design and ratings, ISO rules, modeling, Python coding, metering, cost estimate, special engineering studies, ISO Tariff, and transmission planning are all assets.
