The General Machinist is responsible for operating a variety of machine tools—including manual and CNC lathes, mills, and grinders—to produce precision metal and plastic parts. This role requires the ability to interpret technical drawings, set up machinery, monitor operations, and ensure that parts meet exacting specifications. The machinist plays a key role in maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency to support production needs.
- Read and understand blueprints, CAD files, and engineering specifications to determine part design,
- Set up, operate, and disassemble manual, automatic, and CNC machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders.
- Input measurements, adjust tool offsets, and set reference points to produce accurate parts.
- Inspect finished parts using precision instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to verify and adherence to specifications.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, keep logs of repairs, and notify supervisors of required service.
- Identify malfunctions, diagnose problems, and make necessary machine or program adjustments.
- Secure workpieces, align cutting tools, and prepare raw stock for machining operations.
- Follow all safety procedures, including PPE use and lock-out/tag-out protocols, maintaining a clean and hazard-free work environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of machining processes, tools, and equipment

- High school diploma or equivalent (technical training or apprenticeship preferred)
- 2+ years of experience in a machine shop environment (CNC and manual experience a plus)- Proficiency with measuring tools and inspection equipment
- Basic computer literacy and familiarity with CNC programming languages (G-code preferred)
Mental Demands / Physical Demands / Environmental Factors:
- Standard machine shop equipment, including manual and CNC lathes, milling machines, grinders, cutting tools, and precision measuring instruments.
- Prolonged periods of standing at machines; occasional sitting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Repetitive hand motions, frequent handling of tools and materials, use of precision instruments; occasional reaching overhead or across machines.
- Regular lifting and carrying of materials and parts up to 50 pounds.
- Work performed primarily in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise, vibration, lubricants, coolants, dust, and metal shavings; occasional exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures depending on facility.
- Ability to concentrate on detailed technical tasks; work with frequent interruptions; maintain focus on accuracy and safety under time constraints.
