The Operations Controller will play a pivotal role in overseeing the Procurement-to-Payment (P2P) cycle and will serve as a strategic business partner to the Operations team for the ROOK I Project engineering department. This position entails managing all financial aspects related to costs, budgets, payments, and reconciliations within the Saskatoon operations. The Operations Controller will ensure compliance with accounting standards and SOX, while also supporting operational efficiency and project success.
Additionally, the Operations Controller will act as the primary point of contact and key business partner in the Saskatoon NexGen Office. They will assume the role of Finance lead in the absence of other leaders, ensuring continuity and effective financial stewardship. This role reports directly to the Vice-President of Finance.
Key Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Manage all costs related to the operations of the Company, including the Rook I Project, exploration, site services, permitting, engagement, and community-related expenditures.
- Lead budget and re-forecast processes along with Corporate Controller.
- Monitor budgets versus actuals, providing timely insights and variance analysis.
- Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure that there are sufficient funds available for making payments on time and in full.
- Handle accruals and ensure financial records accuracy.
- Perform reconciliations regularly and in a timely manner to provide management with accurate financial information for decision-making purposes.
- Ensure that payments are accurately recorded and reconciled with financial records, such as invoices and account statements.
- Oversee the entire P2P process, ensuring compliance with internal controls and procedures.
- Identify and monitor relevant key performance matrix for the P2P process in a timely manner.
- Supervise and coach team members in matters related to cash management and P2P processes, ensuring alignment with financial objectives and operational requirements.
- Act as the primary liaison for finance and a key business partner in Saskatoon, working closely with Operations to offer financial insights and facilitate decision-making.
- Serve as the representative for the finance department when senior management is unavailable, showcasing strong leadership and adept problem-solving skills.
- Work closely with the Rook I Project engineering team on project controls, including cash management and the P2P process.
- Ensure seamless integration and coordination between finance and project operations, fostering a cohesive working environment.
- Lead continuous improvement in automation of certain tasks and functions in ERP as well as streamlining the P2P process.
- Act as a key contributor for future system implementation/augmentation.
- Work closely with Procurement department to support them in managing vendor relationships and optimizing procurement strategies for cost-effectiveness.
- Serve as finance representative in the approval process for procurement requests, ensuring that purchases are within budget limits and comply with financial policies.
- Ensure that procurement activities comply with internal financial controls, policies, and external regulations. This includes managing risks associated with procurement activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred.
- Proven experience (7 years at minimum) in financial management, preferably in project accounting or operations finance.
- Strong understanding of Procurement-to-Payment processes and best practices.
- Knowledge of SOX compliance and financial reporting standards.
- Working knowledge of quality or integrated management systems.
- Strong digital literacy using the Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate and provide coordination across multiple disciplines.
- SAP experiences not required but preferred.
