Founded and based in Richmond, BC, Ideon Technologies uses the energy from supernova explosions in space to image deep beneath the Earth’s surface. The world pioneer in cosmic-ray muon tomography, Ideon has developed the REVEAL™ Subsurface Intelligence Platform™, comprising an advanced suite of proprietary data-generation hardware, software, AI-powered services, and multi-physics fusion that provide x-ray-like visibility deep underground and unlock the exponential power of integrated spatial data.
We are a dynamic tech scale-up and a team that is entrepreneurial by nature and focused on doing things right to deliver great customer outcomes. We are committed to seeking out the best brains and the most exceptional humans, wherever they come from and however they happen to be packaged.
We are seeking a Geophysical Analyst
with a grounding in geology to analyze, model, and interpret geophysical data in service of Ideon REVEAL™ subsurface intelligence platform applications.
You will work in a team setting with other geophysical analysts, field geophysicists, applied scientists, software developers, and business development professionals.
This is a technical role focused on computational geophysics, working both independently and collaboratively on active customer projects assigned to you to deliver from start to finish. You will work on cross-functional projects that yield geophysical insights from multiple data sets coupled with advanced analytics and software to deliver subsurface insights to our customers in the mining sector.
This role will also support the business development team by contributing geoscience expertise to customer engagements, proposals, and projects across multiple use cases.
You will make an impact and drive objectives forward by focusing on the following activities:
- Owning the technical quality and proficiency for data processing and analysis for customer projects assigned to you
- Leading advanced geophysical data analysis and inversions for sensing systems; creating multi dataset constrained inversions
- Interpreting complex datasets to extract meaningful subsurface insights
- Performing geophysical survey design, data quality assessment, and processing
- Developing, running and/or validating survey simulations as needed during project development
- Processing and analyzing newly acquired data using Python in Jupyter Notebooks and Geoscience ANALYST, or other in-house and commercial software
- Producing high-quality models, visualizations, and presentations for internal and customer use
- Distilling and presenting results effectively both internally and with customers; typically, updated results are shared with customers on a monthly basis
- Occasionally engaging in project-driven research and development
- In partnership with business development team members, interacting with prospective customers to ensure understanding of their unique problems and to help qualify opportunities
- Assessing technology application feasibility on known use cases and as-yet-unstudied use cases and geological features; proposing technically feasible solutions that create value for our customers while upholding the integrity of the science behind our products
- Developing, refining and/or applying standard operating procedures
- Understanding and committing to good software and project documentation practices
Priorities in the first few months will include:
- Making rapid progress coming up-to-speed with Ideon-specific knowledge and processes (month 1)
- Learning about Ideon’s customers and our “white glove” service level expectations (month 1)
- Leading data analysis and modeling for at least one active customer project, with projects increasing as you get up-to-speed (month 1+) - Building working relationships across the business, in particular with individuals on the geosciences and business development teams (month 1+) - Full understanding and application of our A-to-Z process (month 3+)- Successfully and proactively managing fast-paced analysis of data within required deadlines
- Delivering high-impact geophysical interpretations that enhance the resolution, accuracy, and value of Ideon’s solutions
- Deepening Ideon’s value to customers with clear, defensible, and well-communicated geophysical results
Must-haves
– You’ll need the following to move forward in the hiring process (and be successful in the role):- 3+ years experience in a non-academic, business setting analyzing and interpreting geophysical data
- Graduate degree in geophysics, geology, earth sciences, or closely related field, or an equivalent combo of training and experience; a sub-specialization in data science is an asset
- Experience running inversions, forward modeling, and simulations with multiple data sets
- Understanding of geophysical methods (i.e. gravity, direct current resistivity) and the subtleties of how geophysical inversions work
- Understanding of geology and the theoretical and practical aspects of mineral exploration, resource characterization, and subsurface intelligence
- Advanced-intermediate-level coding capabilities in Python and open-source packages (i.e. PANDAS, NumPy, SciPy); experience using Python to build scripts from scratch, analyze, interpret, and plot data - it would be helpful to include a link to your Github account in your application)
- Proficiency using geophysical analysis software to fully process and independently analyze a range of survey data (i.e. Geoscience ANALYST, ArcGIS, Paraview, SimPEG)
- Previous success in delivering highly organized and collaborative projects, either in an academic or commercial setting
- Detail-oriented and committed to delivering high quality work quickly
- Keen and able to see how the work connects to the bigger picture and Ideon’s overall business
- A customer-centric mindset; enthusiasm for and/or experience creating excellent customer interactions
- Enthusiasm for and/or experience presenting confidently to technical and non-technical audiences
- Comfortable interacting (virtually and in person, in oral and written form) with customers of varying technical acumen
- Well-developed communication skills in English at a fluent or professional level; able to convey complex data insights clearly and professionally
- Legally able and currently documented to work full-time hours in Canada
- Experience or excitement for working in a tech scale-up; happy to wear a few hats and learn on the fly.

Ideon’s salary ranges are determined by role and level and are benchmarked against companies of similar size and stage in the Vancouver, BC, Canada market. The range reflects the minimum and maximum new employee salary. It is not typical for a new employee to be hired at the top of the range; as experienced as someone may be they likely won’t have the directly related experience unique to working at Ideon. In exceptional circumstances, though, where a person has the knowledge, skills, and experience to exceed those needed for the position, we may consider compensating at the top of the range. In the application process you will be asked to provide your salary expectations.
