Engineer III or Senior Engineer— Midwest Distribution, Protection, Automation and Control (DPAC) - Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
Note: This position may be filled at either the Engineer II or Engineer III level based on the selected candidate’s experience.
Position Summary:
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
•Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity,
•Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities,
•Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team,
•Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity,
•Conducts engineering and related studies.
•Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems,
•Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies,
•Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities,
•Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills,
•Maintains accurate records and files, and
•Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Required/Basic Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.
Engineer III
•Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
•In addition to required degree, four (4) years minimum of related work experience.
•A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
Senior Engineer
•Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
•Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
•A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree
Desired Qualifications
•Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
•Additional coursework in system protection theory

Additional Preferred Qualifications
•Understanding of basic theory of power system protection and coordination.
•Understanding of basic theory of power system protection for renewable energy sources.
•Familiarity with Distribution system protective devices and how they operate.
•Familiarity with software tools used for power system protection analysis (CYMTCC, SKM, ETAP, etc.)
•Familiarity with SEL relay operation and programming.
•Familiarity with the principles/practices of Distribution Automation.
•Understanding of basic principles of project management.
•Experience in the utility industry.
Working Conditions
•Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
Specific Requirements

•A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
