Under limited direction, responsible for managing electrical substation related projects, supervising electrical substations equipment testing, ensuring efficient and safe operation while the electrical substation construction is occurring, and adhering to industry construction standards and regulations.
This job may include overseeing external contractors, engineering firms, technicians, CAD Drafters, and other staff members. May develop, review, and/or implement detailed designs for electrical substations, including layouts, single-line diagrams, and equipment specifications ensuring adherence to relevant safety regulations and industry codes, such as the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Execute engineering calculations for equipment sizing, including bus sizing, grounding, voltage drop, and thermal calculations. May develop, review, and/or implement designs for grounding systems, protection schemes, and control systems to enhance substation functionality, safety and reliability; troubleshoots operational issues and implements corrective actions to optimize substation performance and updates safety protocols for the handling of high-voltage equipment and hazardous materials. Manages engineering scope for substation projects, ensuring alignment with technical contracts and maintaining project schedules while providing technical support during the installation and commissioning of all projects. Collaborates with project teams, including engineers, contractors, and safety inspectors, to facilitate project execution within design specifications and industry standards, and resolves issues; Provides reports and updates on project status and compliance. Oversees procurement processes for equipment and materials and ensures technical compliance during inspections. Prepare and maintain accurate documentation of engineering activities, including design changes, field modifications, and as-built drawings. Develop and review bills of materials (BOMs) and ensure that technical specifications meet industry requirements. Completes other job duties as assigned.
Knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals: Understanding of electrical systems, transmission, and distribution networks is crucial for designing and maintaining substations. Knowledge of power systems engineering: Knowledge of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems, including the interaction and requirements of various components. Knowledge of safety standards and regulations: Familiarity with national and local safety codes, environmental regulations, and industry standards such as NESC and NEC. Expertise in working with high-voltage equipment, switchgear, transformers, and protection and control systems Proficient knowledge in Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems which are essential for monitoring and controlling substation operations. Skill to conceptualize engineering problems and design effective solutions. Skill to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Skill in conducting performance tests, troubleshooting electrical issues, and ensuring equipment reliability. Strong interpersonal skills for working collaboratively within teams of engineers, project managers, and contractors. Skill in managing projects, including budgeting and scheduling, are beneficial, especially for senior positions. Strong ability to design substation layouts, create single-line diagrams, and utilize CAD software for electrical design. Ability to analyze complex issues, develop solutions, and implement systems effectively is essential. Strong ability to ensure accuracy and compliance with specifications, especially when dealing with intricate designs and standards. Ability to track project schedules and budgets. Ability to maintain knowledge of emerging trends and industry best practices. Ability to work independently on assignments and projects. Ability to perform field inspections and document findings.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university with a major in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field from an Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) accredited university program and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in electric utility engineering, conducting substation or transmission design work or a closely related.
Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver’s License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.
Must be a Professional Engineer licensed in the State of Texas. Professional Engineer license from other jurisdictions providing comity with Texas may be allowed; however, candidate must acquire a Texas Professional Engineer license within 12 months of being placed in this position in order to remain in the position.
