Reports To: Electric Construction or Maintenance Supervisor
Wage Scale Designation: Dependent upon level of completion of recognized apprenticeship program
Under the supervision of the Electric Construction or Maintenance Supervisor, this position is responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair, and safe operation of transmission and distribution power lines, distribution equipment, substations and other electrical facilities and equipment. This role includes troubleshooting energized and de-energized systems, performing service restoration, and maintaining equipment.
- Construct, maintain and repair transmission and distribution power lines and substations and other electrical facilities and equipment.
- Receives daily work assignments, guidance, and technical direction from the department foreman while maintaining a direct reporting relationship to the Electric Construction or Maintenance Supervisor.
- Construct and maintain traffic signal lights and streetlights.
- Assist in substation inspections, equipment testing, and maintenance.
- Install electrical cables, transformers, insulators, switches, conduit, breakers, telephone underground facilities, and other electrical equipment.
- Operate and maintain utility equipment, such as bucket trucks, digger derricks, directional drills, vacuum excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and skid steers.
- Strings and pulls electrical cable through ducts, splices cable according to specifications.
- Answers trouble calls, analyzes problems and takes corrective action.
- Works on energized conductors and/or devices.
- Adhere to all Brookings Municipal Utilities policies and procedures, including safety policies and recognized industry standards
- Utilize company designated devices and software platforms to access utility information and accurately record time worked, document work performed, materials used, and maintain required records.
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure proper operation.
- Participate in standby rotation as assigned and respond during adverse weather or emergency conditions as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Graduation from vocational/technical school in power line studies preferred.
- Completion of recognized electrical apprenticeship program or willingness to complete BMU designated apprenticeship program c to obtain journeyman status.
- Knowledge of electrical systems, electrical theory and the operation of equipment used in repairing or building electric power systems.
- Ability to use company-designated devices for record management, including entering, retrieving, and updating operational, maintenance, and service information.
- Must possess mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, and technical documents.
- Evaluate information to make decisions or recommendations.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Utility employees, officials, and the public.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Possession or the ability to obtain a South Dakota Class A CDL with air breaks license within 180 days of hire.
- Other such testing as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal Utilities.
