Primary Purpose
The Database Administrator role is responsible for design, implementation, maintenance, and security of database management across Enterprise, in support of a comprehensive array of databases that support company business applications. This role will assist with the management and monitoring of enterprise database management systems, confirming that the systems are running efficiently and proactively preventing production issues. The Database Administrator is also responsible for enterprise-wide maintenance of databases and data environments, including performing version and patching upgrades. The role further includes the responsibility for building queries, stored procedures, database views and data models in support of Analytics and integration initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a background in database management, master data management, data analytics, computer science, or a related field with a desire to learn necessary business processes and procedures unique to the energy sector.
Duties and Responsibilities
Database Management and Governance:
Maintains and manages enterprise-wide database footprint, including maintaining database inventory, version upgrades and security patches.
Monitors database performance, ensuring maximum achievable up-time of production systems. Includes implementing logging and monitoring best practices.
Maintains database backups and performs database restores and required.
Ensures database supportability and applies best practice security posturing to database environments.
Performs primary database support role, acting as L1 and L2 support. Responsible for performing root cause analysis when issues arise.
Assists in the development and implementation of disaster recovery recommendations for company databases.
Orchestrates all aspects of database change management, applying server resources and properly documenting as required to maintain and audit company data environments.
Works cross functionally with other technology and business teams, providing database support as required to meet business needs.
Participates in technology projects, performing functions such as database schema design, object creation and implementation.
Performs activities related to Data movement/ETL.
Configuration and maintenance of database user and role security.
Troubleshooting:
Assists in timely resolution of issues in development, testing and production environments.
Documents root cause analysis as required.
Collaboration:
Work with cross-functional IT and enterprise teams to build alignment and model commitment to high performance as “one team”
Communicates with IT Management, relevant to database performance and data management issues.
Works collaboratively with the business, IT and Cyber Security to translate business needs into deliverable, data-related solutions.
Communicates with all levels of management and end users across all activities performed, including maintenance, analysis, development, testing, and operational tasks.
Provides status updates and communication of issue identification. Coordinates approvals as required to enable change.
Presents production changes to IT & Cybersecurity Change Advisory Board
Provides audit evidence upon request
Drives the relationship and communications across business lines to ensure security is embedded within solutions
Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree Business Management, Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent relevant work experience
Experience
3 years work experience related to database engineering, master data management, data governance, data analytics, software engineering, platform engineering, computer science, information management
Skills and Abilities
Technical Skills:
Use of SQL Server Management Studio and other tools required to support a SQL Server database environment. Experience maintaining enterprise database platforms.
Ability to write T-SQL queries.
Ability to integrate databases, using middleware and APIs.
Support oriented: Ability to provide timely and quality support to our clients.
Capable of performing root cause analysis when confronted with performance issues. Including ability to locate bottlenecks, monitor workload and throughput, review SQL performance and optimization, and manage DBMS resources.
Ability to apply tools, methods, and practices to manage data-based assets along their lifecycle.
Ability to perform database upgrades and safely/securely apply database patches.
Technical Knowledge:
Up to date knowledge and in-depth understanding of the latest versions and capabilities of SQL Enterprise DBMS.
Knowledge of SQL and interactions with common programing languages such as Python, JAVA, and C#.
Understanding of data warehousing technology, including online analytical processing (OLAP) and star schema.
Familiar with deployment and management cloud databases such as Microsoft SQL Azure.
Licenses and Certifications
Certified in: Data Management Professional (CDMP), Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT) Preferred
