PURPOSE:
This position is relied upon for technical expertise to support strategic plans and projects for industrial facilities (Refining/Petrochem/Specialty Chemical/Mid-Stream/ Other) utilization, optimization, and process safety improvements.
The project responsibilities for this role will primarily center on early-phase feasibility studies and conceptual process design development. The role will also assist in evaluating / defining of more complex unit and industrial system issues, along with mentoring less experienced engineers on problem solving and definition. This position will report to the Executive Director of Project Development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Develop design basis and front-end engineering for minor and major capital projects. Examples include long-term capital project planning, conceptual project development, technology selection, and management of detailed engineering.
•Serve as project manager for early phase project work as required. Lead or participate in facility process improvement studies.
•Perform economic evaluations for options.
•Conduct various studies to improve plant safety (PHA, LOPA), reliability, and economics.
•Prepare process design basis and specifications for revamps and new projects (e.g., hydraulic studies/heat and material balances, sizing of equipment). Utilize process simulators for evaluation of unit performance and design changes.
•Develop procedures and support for commissioning new facilities. Facilitate agreements on operating philosophies and control strategies on plant units.
•Provide mentorship to junior process engineers in tool utilization, troubleshooting, and process monitoring.
•Lead or coordinate refinery performance studies.
•Present findings / reports to client organizations, technical and executive audience.
•Stay abreast of new technologies and trends
CRITICAL SELECTION CRITERIA:
•Technical: 10 - 12 years' experience supporting unit operations/projects in a refinery or petrochemical plant OR 10-12 years EPC Process Design experience. Completed at least two assignments in the area of expertise (typically 18 to 24 mos. in duration). Interest in continued technical development. Demonstrated practical application of the CHE fundamentals of mass transfer/distillation, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and kinetics. Experienced in participating in studies such as PHA, IPR/ROI, LOPA, AOA, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets. Limited travel up to 25% based on project requirements.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
•Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering
•A minimum of 10 years of related process engineering experience supporting refinery/petrochemical plant/oil and gas/specialty chemicals processing.
•Must have a registered Professional Engineering (PE) license, Texas and/or South Carolina preferred.
•Experience in process design.
•Advanced understanding of how equipment functions in the field and overall plant operation.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong ability to work with cross functional teams, able to communicate technical ideas to a wide range of groups.
PREFERRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
Experience leading or supporting phase gated capital projects process.
