Spear C & I is seeking a Solar PV Designer / CAD Technician to support our Design & Engineering group.
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will develop detailed construction drawings, site plans, array layouts, electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and other project documentation. You will be expected to demonstrate strong drafting skills, follow established CAD standards, and quickly learn and apply company design guidelines.
This role offers remote or hybrid flexibility, with preference for candidates located in Central Texas.
- Produce detailed CAD drawings and schematics using Autodesk AutoCAD, following company standards and best practices.
- Utilize advanced AutoCAD features including Sheet Set Manager, Geolocation tools, datalinks, and xref management.
- Maintain and expand CAD block libraries, templates, and standardized design resources.
- Support engineering staff with design calculations, take-offs, and technical documentation.
- Assist with solar PV project layouts and coordination between engineering, procurement, and construction teams.
- Ensure drawings and documentation follow internal protocols and quality requirements.
- 1–3 years of drafting/design experience using AutoCAD.
- Understanding of drafting fundamentals, including layering, scaling, text standards, and plotting.
- Proficiency in Excel, including formulas, macros, or basic VBA scripting.
- Experience with PDF creation/editing and managing markups/revisions.- 5+ years of AutoCAD drafting/design experience.
- Experience with Sheet Set Manager, Geolocation, and other advanced AutoCAD tools.
- Solar PV industry or electrical design experience.
- Experience with Helioscope, PVsyst, or similar PV modeling software.
- Understanding of basic electrical engineering principles and exposure to NEC/NFPA 70.
- Experience with GIS, photogrammetry, or drone mapping software.
- Interest or experience in AutoLISP or other automation/scripting languages.
- Highly detail-oriented and committed to accurate, consistent work.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively in a remote or hybrid environment.
- Eager to grow within the solar industry, with potential to lead design efforts or mentor junior staff over time.
