Work is varied in nature and performed both indoors and outdoors under all conditions of weather. Operator is responsible for performing all tasks required for an activated sludge treatment facility to maintain effective, efficient, and sanitary plant operations in accordance with the Mississippi Pollution Control Law, Section 49‑17‑1, EPA's Regulation 40 CFR Part 125 and 40 CFRPart 503. Collects samples for process control and documentation analyses. Conducts process control tests. Within prescribed limits, varies plant operation as required by test results. Maintains historical log and equipment monitoring logs and other written records. Tabulates data as required for management analyses. Cleans work areas. Hoses down treatment tanks and equipment. Assists in yard work on occasion. Greases equipment and makes minor adjustments as required. Monitors status of equipment continuously. Reports equipment problems to maintenance. Receives shipments of goods arriving for the Authority. Clears blockages in process piping. Attends classes and studies relevant materials as required, informs management of major problems as they arise.
Technical school or college training in area relating to the work is desirable. Correspondence course work in wastewater treatment desirable. Previous experience in activated sludge wastewater plant operations highly desirable.
1. Must be a high school graduate (GED acceptable).
2. Must have passed the Class IV certification examination administered by the MS Department of Environmental Quality and achieve Class IV certification within one year of employment.
3. Must be extremely reliable and must report to work promptly at the necessary time.
4. Must be able to perform routine calculations and tabulations skillfully and with reasonable speed.
5. Must direct subordinate personnel as required by Plant Supervisor.
6. Must possess the skills necessary to understand and conduct the proper operation of an activated sludge wastewater treatment facility.
7. Must be able to operate groundskeeping equipment such as a lawn mower and weedeater, operate valves, and work with hand tools for extended periods of time.
8. Must be able to continuously lift and carry medium loads.
9. Must be able to continuously perform heavy physical labor.
10. Must be able to continuously walk and climb stairs.
11. Must be able to work in confined spaces.
12. Must be able to work with chemicals such as chlorine and HTH.
13. Must be able to wear MSA breathing apparatus.
14. Must be insurable on the Authority's auto insurance policy.
15. Must maintain a residence which allows a reasonable response time.
