Assistant Operator

Cobble Mountain Station

Formed in 1902, HG&E is a municipally owned utility that provides electricity, natural gas, and fiber optic internet services to over 18,000 customers. We are currently looking for a qualified candidate to fill a vacancy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the hydro facility owned by the Springfield Sewer and Water Commission (SSWC) at, Cobble Mountain facility that is operated by HG&E. Successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to make operation decisions based upon multiple data sources to achieve maximum utilization of SSWC assets in full compliance with applicable requirements.

DUTIES

Operate supervisory control equipment to start-up, synchronize, load, control & monitor various Department functions including hydroelectric generation systems and electric production areas at the Cobble Mountain Station and Dam that is owned by the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission and operated by Holyoke Gas and Electric Department. Maintain, test, repair, and modify power station mechanical equipment or similar equipment such as turbines, pumps, compressors, engines, valves, auxiliary equipment and other Department assets. Design, build and replace parts of equipment; diagnose, and maintain equipment and perform periodic maintenance. Coordinate with other Department personnel to ensure safe operation and maintenance of all equipment. Dispatch incoming calls for assistance to proper Departmental personnel as needed. Utilize PC based computer control systems and perform various operations, maintenance, and other related duties as required.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma or GED

2 Years’ experience as a Power Plant Equipment Repairman, Assistant Operator Hydro, or electro-mechanical technician

Proven mechanical aptitude and abilities

Ability to work 8 hour rotating shifts as well as emergency and planned overtime as assigned

Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office software and basic computer navigation skills

Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and interpret One Line circuit diagrams of generating stations, substations, electricdistribution facilities

A positive attitude and the ability to productively work in a team environment and communicate effectively with other team members

Self-starter qualities and ability to perform work alone with minimal direct supervision

Regular and reliable attendance

Experienced in performing all Power Plant maintenance functions including mowing and yard work

Demonstrated ability to perform a complete hydro turbine, generator, and facilities maintenance, and properly diagnose/correct anyfaulty conditions

Diagnose and repair any mechanical equipment and demonstrate the ability to devise repair schemes where no standard or specificdirections are available

Valid Driver’s License

PREFERRED ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: (In addition to above)

3 years’ HSMO/O experience at Cobble Mountain Station or other similar size high head hydro station

MA Hoisting Engineers License # 3A

REMARKS

Successful candidate must reside within a reasonable driving distance of Cobble Mountain, be able to obtain and/or maintain MAHoisting Engineers #3A within 6 months of hire. Must be able to pass pre-employment physical, drug screening, and criminalbackground check. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and a 12-month written training program. Successfulcandidate must be able to acquire and maintain operator qualifications and required licenses.
