The salary range shown represents the minimum to midpoint salary for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on qualifications and experience.
Professional engineering position responsible for the complex coordination, planning, designing, estimating and preparation of specifications for the building of electrical distribution and gas utilities. Manages distribution projects. Works independently in a multi-project environment. Coordinates and manages activities that will ensure compliance with Federal, Regional and State laws, rules and policies that govern the provision of electric and gas services. Works in collaboration with all division department heads to coordinate compliance activities. Reports to the Supervising Engineer.
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree accredited by ABET in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering. Minimum of two (2) years of experience with an electric utility or a consulting Engineering firm in utility power engineering is required. Registration as an Engineer Intern (EI) is required or must be able to obtain within 12 months. Registration as a Professional Engineer with the State of Florida is desirable but not required. Knowledge of Milsoft (EA), Aspen or other power system modeling software is a plus.

Works closely with the Supervising Engineer on the identification of and planning for electric, gas, and fiber capital projects including construction of new facilities and expansion of existing facilities. Assists the Supervising Engineer in preparation of a long- and short-term Capital Improvement Plan and annual budget to include cost estimates and work justifications.
Prepares, manages and approves design and construction plans for overhead & underground electrical distribution, and gas utilities. Specifies items for purchase and furnishes detailed design information.
Serves as project manager for system improvement projects through effectively coordinating contract document preparation; city, county, state and federal permitting; administration and inspection of contractor forces on engineering projects to insure compliance with plans and specifications; coordination with other utilities. Directs activities of consulting engineers used to supplement department’s resources.
Prepares, develops and maintains material and labor estimates and technical specifications for electric and gas systems.
Assists Supervising Engineer with Specific Authorizations with FPUA’s continuing contract engineers or Requests for Qualifications for other engineering firms to perform engineering services to design, permit and provide construction engineering services for capital projects. Provide direction to contract engineers from project conception through project completion and closeout.
Works closely with architects or engineers on larger constructions of a commercial nature for pre-planning of the electric and gas systems. Work closely with developers of new subdivisions concerning utility locations and standards required by FPUA.
Complies with all applicable National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) reliability standards requirements, SERC Reliability Corporation (SERC) reliability standards requirements, and all FPUA reliability standards.
Prepares, updates and coordinates the use of computer programs to perform complex electrical engineering calculations and accurate modeling of the electric system.
Assists the development of geographic information system (GIS) maps and databases and the preparation of design drawings for electric and gas systems.
Furnishes sound engineering advice to customers, electricians and staff. Provides technical assistance to other departments.
Assists in training department personnel in the various functions of the department. Supervises and schedules other engineers, drafting/engineering technicians and inspection personnel as required. Provides technical guidance to department personnel.
Assists Supervising Engineer with transmission and substation projects as needed.
Supports FPUAnet Communications in development of fiber systems, as needed.
