D&R Tank is the largest designer and manufacturer of large‑capacity welded steel water tanks in New Mexico, serving surrounding states including Texas, Arizona, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Since 1978, we have manufactured and rehabilitated over 1,500 welded steel tanks and fabricate custom metal projects across multiple industries—including artistic installations.

The Fabrication Estimator prepares accurate cost estimates for metal fabrication projects involving structural steel, sheet metal, and custom components. Responsibilities include reviewing project specifications and drawings, preparing detailed estimates, and collaborating with engineering, production, and procurement teams to ensure competitive, profitable bids.
- Experience in manufacturing and/or cost estimating within metal fabrication.
- Knowledge of plasma cutting, welding, and related time/job costing.
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret structural/architectural drawings.
- Ability to identify carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and MRP software.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple job schedules.
- Strong independent and team-working skills.
- Ability to write bid proposals and quotations.
- Ability to produce complete material and labor estimates.
- Experience obtaining and evaluating vendor and fabricator quotes.
- Experience developing project durations and schedules.
- Collaboration with department leads to establish labor estimates for complex projects.
- Strong relationship-building skills with clients, fabricators, and vendors.
- Minimum 5 years of cost estimating experience, preferably in a construction or steel fabrication environment.
- Background in steel fabrication.
- Understanding of AWS welding codes and AISC Steel Construction standards.
- Ability to perform take-offs for structural and miscellaneous steel.
- Knowledge of fabrication and erection methods.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and ability to meet deadlines.
- English reading and writing proficiency.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Must be employable in the U.S., have reliable transportation, and hold a valid driver’s license.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- Review and interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine material, labor, and time requirements.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractors.
- Work with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify project requirements.
- Source and confirm pricing from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Maintain updated cost databases, material pricing, and labor rates.
- Prepare and submit bid proposals on schedule.
- Analyze completed projects to compare estimated vs. actual costs and identify improvement opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and company policies.
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes, materials, and standards.
- Proficiency in reading technical drawings and blueprints.
- Excellent analytical and mathematical abilities.
- Familiarity with estimating software and Microsoft Office.
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
