This position is responsible for work performed in the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes and accidents. Duties include protecting property, facilities, and people through the enforcement of laws and ordinances under the direct supervision of the Police Corporal. Independent judgment is used according to the situation and sometimes different courses of action must be taken to complete the task.
- Patrols City streets, businesses, and residential districts enforcing city ordinances and state laws
- Investigates suspected crimes, reports findings, and arrests suspected individuals
- Investigates accidents involving persons or property, reports probable cause of accidents, and pursues appropriate course of action
- Directs and controls traffic including special events and school traffic
- Testifies in court or legal proceedings
- Issues verbal warnings, written citations, and arrests as needed
- Operates and maintains all law enforcement equipment
- Address citizen concerns and complaints, keep records, and make reports
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to fire a weapon accurately and pass annual certifications
- Ability to pass a thorough background investigation, drug screen, physical fitness test, mental evaluation, and submit fingerprints to the TBI
- Must complete a POST approved police academy with a satisfactory score in all fields
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach, push, pull, run, climb stairs, and lift up to 50 lbs
- Ability to operate law enforcement equipment including, police cars, mobile radios, recorders, radar equipment, cameras, intoxilyzer, fingerprinting equipment, NCIC computer, tear gas equipment, batons and lethal weapons, such as pistols, shotguns, and rifles
- Ability to work in dangerous conditions, and outdoors in various weather conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees
- Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation, and the examination of records.

- Knowledge of the court system and presentation of evidence in court proceedings
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action, with or without the use of deadly force
