For over 150 years, Exline, Inc. has been a leader in heavy industrial repair, machining, and field services. We are currently seeking an experienced Field Machinist to join our team. This is a hands-on, field-based role requiring advanced technical skill, adaptability, and a strong commitment to quality and safety.
This position requires extensive travel (75% or more), working directly with customers across the U.S. on large-scale industrial projects.
Under the supervision of the Mechanic Superintendent or Foreman, the Field Machinist provides precision mechanical maintenance and repair services to industrial equipment and engines, both in the shop and at customer sites. This role demands expertise with manual machining processes, the ability to lead teams on-site, and the flexibility to perform in diverse environments.
- Operate and perform precision work using shop and field machining equipment such as:
- Mills, Lathes, Boring Bars, Line Boring, Liner Splitters, and Thermal Spray Equipment.
- Accurately use precision field measurement tools, including micrometers, dial indicators, depth gauges, optical tools, wireline equipment, and web gauges.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and service instructions.
- Execute repair, maintenance, and overhaul work independently or while leading small teams.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for customers on-site, ensuring safe, efficient, and quality work is delivered.
- Maintain clear communication between Exline shops and customer sites to ensure project timelines and standards are met.
- Train and mentor less experienced machinists and mechanics.
- Submit accurate reports, project documentation, and timecards using basic computer skills.
- Ensure strict compliance with Exline safety standards and customer site requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Proven expertise in manual machining (mills, lathes, boring bars) and precision measurement instruments.
- Strong mechanical knowledge of industrial prime movers, compressors, and rotating equipment.
- Ability to solve practical problems and adapt to non-standardized situations in the field.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with both coworkers and customers.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a crew.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Clean driving record and ability to obtain a DOT medical card (non-CDL company vehicles).
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2–3+ years of hands-on manual machining experience in industrial environments.- Experience in field machining, repair, or rotating equipment maintenance preferred.
- Equivalent training and experience will be considered.
- Work performed both in the shop and at customer sites in varying industrial environments.
- Frequent exposure to loud noise, moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, vibration, and airborne particles.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather, chemicals, electrical hazards, or working at heights.
- Regular standing, walking, reaching, handling, and lifting.
- Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling in tight spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and more than 100 lbs. occasionally (with assistance).
- Good vision (close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception).
