Summary:
The Manager, Safety Operations, will develop, deploy, lead, and maintain an effective and sustainable safety culture across the business units. This requires flexibility and adaptability to ensure their team is providing timely critical feedback in a consistent and proactive manner. This position will ensure the team works closely with the business unit leadership to positively affect outcomes at the worker interface. It is accountable, along with the business unit leadership team for performance against the organization’s stated health and safety performance goals. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance and the successful execution of the Safety & Health programs. This includes supporting the business units in the execution of the contractor and public safety programs.
The Safety Manager provides direction and leadership from the following perspectives:
•Lead efforts in creating, developing, implementing, fostering and sustaining a safety culture where employees own, promote, and reinforce safe behaviors and feel empowered to speak up
•Responsible for ensuring all Safety & Health programs, training, and strategy are successfully implemented across the business units. This applies to employee, contractor, and public safety initiatives.
•Influence and coach team and business unit leadership and frontline employees on development of robust action plans to improve safety performance and to implement strategy moving forward
•Stay well versed in and ensure the company complies with all state, federal and local regulatory requirements
•Establish and develop substantive working relationships with peers, staff, business unit leadership and union leadership. Create an environment and implement changes, where needed, to enhance FirstEnergy’s culture of safety, compliance, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement
Deliver results on an established and standardized metrics/dashboard to measure performance, including a robust assessment / audit process to demonstrate compliance with all laws and regulations as well as the safety management system
•Establish clear accountabilities for team members with performance objectives that align with the overall FE and departmental strategy
•Initiate and monitor implementation of appropriate safety and safeguards in accordance with applicable regulations and professional practice to ensure that employee, community and environmental hazards and impacts of operational activities are eliminated or reduced to acceptable risk levels
•Ability to analyze data and identify trends to drive continuous improvement in safety performance.
•Plan, organize, control, integrate and evaluate the work of the Safety & Health Team
•Provide financial oversight and meet financial commitments for departmental budget
Qualifications:
•Accomplished and approachable leader, with a demonstrated track record of safe operations excellence and people leadership
•Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in field safety operations and electric utility industry experience is strongly preferred, to include at least seven (7) years of management experience
•Bachelor’s degree in technical field of study required and safety related field of study preferred.
•Prior leadership responsibility for safety programs / systems
•Strategic vision and continuous improvement of mindset
•Demonstrated track record of driving safety excellence and establishing applicable programs, policies and best practices
In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and compliance
Specific knowledge and experience requirements include:
•Federal, state and local laws, regulations affecting safety and the utility industry
•Critical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
•Demonstrated execution of operational initiatives
•Excellent interpersonal communication skills and flexibility to interact with all levels of employees
•Proven ability to work in a cross-functional setting
Ability to:
•Lead by example, facilitate and lead teams through change, and promote the values of trust and integrity
•Analyze difficult and complex issues and strategies, reach sound and logical fact-based conclusions and recommendations
•Understand, interpret, explain, and apply local, state, and federal policy, law, regulation, and as they relate to safety and operations
•Evaluate departmental practices and make sound recommendations for improvements; develop and implement appropriate procedures and controls
•Exercise sound expert independent judgment within general policy guidelines
•Communicate and respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the community.
This position requires (50%) of the time in the field working with the business units
