SUMMARY:
Ensures the stability and integrity of the Cooperative's IT and OT assets. This includes installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing all network hardware, software, telephony equipment, and communication links. The Network Technician will operate as a part of the IT team to ensure network software and hardware components are protected from cyberattacks and support all MEC personnel in matters of IT and OT. The Network Technician will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide network administration of all workstations and Windows Servers, including setup of new user accounts and permissions using Active Directory and Entra.
· Investigate and troubleshoot user-related computer issues to ensure that network resources are available to them.
•Install, maintain, and train users on IOS tablets configured with an MDM system for field personnel.
•Assist in the security of cooperative IT/OT networks.
•Assist in monitoring external intrusions and attacks too the IT/OT networks.
•Install, troubleshoot, and maintain cooperative LANs, WANs, and wireless networks.
•Assist/lead training of MEC personnel on cybersecurity topics by use of KnowBe4, classroom training, and email/other means.
•Dispose of company network assets within MEC policy guidelines.
•Install and maintain software, including operating systems, databases, and all applications utilized by MEC.
•Support and maintain telecommunications equipment to include programming, diagnosing, and upgrading telephone systems and voicemail.
•Recommend and purchase network hardware, personal computers, peripherals, software, and supplies as assigned.
•Advise and train end users in the use of existing technology while demonstrating a supportive and helpful attitude.
•Assist in maintaining backups and off-site replications of MEC servers and data.
•Assist with the installation and maintenance of all Radio equipment as needed.
•Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure network products and services.
•Assist in the annual budget process for network hardware and software.
•Assist with special projects.
•Keep abreast of all current network, software/hardware applications utilized by the cooperative and train MEC personnel in their use.
•Attend training (onsite and remote) to further develop IT, OT, and cooperative skills.
•Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The employee uses initiative and judgment to determine how to proceed with assignments. Various methods and procedures are available, and the employee determines those best suited to each task. The employee is expected to plan the sequence of steps and use judgment to solve problems, occasionally adapting methods and techniques to fit unusual circumstances. The supervisor may review the work for soundness of approach or may occasionally spot-check for accuracy, but the details of the work are normally assumed to be accurate. The supervisor provides directions on policy issues.
EDUCATION &/OR EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related degree.
· A minimum of two years’ Windows PC, Windows Server, and tablet-related network experience is preferred. Advanced certifications are a plus. Previous electric cooperative experience is a plus.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES:
The fully qualified applicant must possess the following knowledge:
•Knowledge of LAN/WAN standards and protocols, workstation/server troubleshooting, security services, and backup procedures using various hardware and software applications.
•Strong IT skills with a deep understanding of cyber hacker methodology.
•Ability to identify vulnerabilities and overall security issues.
•Must be able to efficiently operate and interconnect workstations, servers, printers, routers, switches, wireless equipment, tablets, etc.
•Must have excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate clearly with employees at all levels of the organization and externally.
•Excellent multi-tasking skills. Prioritize and perform a variety of concurrent tasks with minimal direction or supervision.
•Must be able to stay abreast of developments in the field that might be useful to the cooperative and communicate them effectively to upper management.
•Establish and maintain effective working relationships with end users.
•Coordinate with all department co-workers as a team member.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
· This position will operate within normal office conditions, with occasional work within a substation escorted by qualified substation personnel. Four 10-hour or five 8-hour days per week available. Occasional evenings, early mornings, and weekend work. Subject to callout in the event of an emergency or scheduled maintenance.
· Must be able to lift and carry PCs and related computer equipment and must operate in such a manner that a safe and hazard-free working environment is always maintained to the greatest degree possible.
· Required to hold a valid Montana Driver’s License.
