JOB DESCRIPTION
The Senior Fusion / Welding Inspector is responsible for overseeing and verifying all welding and fusion activities related to HDPE and carbon steel pipeline construction in a produced water pipeline system. This role ensures that all field joints—thermal fusion or welded—are performed to the highest quality standards in accordance with applicable codes, specifications, and procedures. The ideal candidate is a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) with additional qualifications in HDPE thermal fusion and has extensive hands-on field experience in oil and gas pipeline construction.
The essential job functions include, but are not limited to
Inspection and Quality Assurance:•Perform visual inspections of HDPE fusion joints and carbon steel welds for mainline, tie-ins, and fittings.
•Witness and document fusion and welding procedures, ensuring compliance with qualified WPS/PQRs.
•Review and verify proper execution of pre-heat, inter-pass, post-weld heat treatment, and fusion parameters.
•Confirm operator certifications (fusion technicians and welders) are valid and current.
•Monitor and document equipment calibration records for fusion machines and welding units.
•Ensure alignment, beveling, cleanliness, and joint preparation meet project and code requirements.
•Inspect and verify proper NDT application and interpretation (e.g., hydrotests, x-ray, ultrasonic).
Documentation and Reporting:
•Maintain detailed weld and fusion logs including joint numbers, GPS coordinates, inspectors, operators, and results.
•Compile weld map data and assist with as-built documentation for project turnover.
•Create and issue daily inspection reports and non-conformance reports (NCRs) when applicable.
•Participate in QA/QC audits, pre-job briefings, and closeout packages.
Compliance & Safety:
•Enforce and uphold company safety policies, PPE standards, and environmental protections during welding/fusion operations.
•Ensure all welding and fusion activities comply with DOT 49 CFR Part 192/195 (as applicable), API 1104, ASTM F2620, ASME B31.3/B31.4/B31.8, and other governing standards.
•Support Safety Officers in investigating incidents involving weld/fusion failures.

Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
Education:•High school diploma or GED required.
•Technical training in welding, materials science, or pipeline construction preferred.
Experience:
•Minimum 7 years of experience in pipeline welding/fusion inspection, with at least 3 years specific to HDPE fusion in oil & gas or industrial utility systems.
•Familiarity with small and large diameter produced water pipelines (HDPE and carbon steel).
•Experience with construction documentation, QA/QC reporting, and contractor oversight.
Certifications:
•Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – AWS certification (required)
•Certified Fusion Inspector or equivalent HDPE fusion training (e.g., McElroy, ASTM F2620) (required)
•NDT Level I/II in VT or UT (preferred)
•OSHA 30-hour (preferred)
Skills & Competencies:
•Advanced knowledge of welding and fusion codes, specifications, and inspection methodologies.
•High attention to detail, with ability to detect minor inconsistencies that could result in major field issues.
•Strong interpersonal skills to communicate with contractors, engineers, safety personnel, and project managers.
•Capable of interpreting engineering drawings, isometric sketches, and field redlines.
•Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and field data capture tools (e.g., Trimble, Bluebeam, Procore).
