Summary
The Steam Generator Program Engineer serves as the technical and programmatic lead for the steam generators at the Duke Energy PWR Nuclear Plants. In this role, the Steam Generator Program Engineer serves as the central point of contact for steam generator issues for the fleet. In addition to being responsible for technical and programmatic issues for the steam generators, the Steam Generator Program Engineer helps to establish the scope for steam generator inspection and maintenance activities and provides technical oversight for these activities during outages.
Collateral duties of this position include performing work on special projects, assessments, benchmarks, and other steam generator fleet initiatives, as well as performing related steam generator work activities in support of all Duke sites on as-needed basis.
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. The Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
The Senior Engineer is at the mid-career level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Senior Engineer is fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures to identify problems, develop and implement solutions. The Senior Engineer serves in an advisory role, providing guidance to other engineers and project managers.
The Steam Generator Program Engineer will report to the Manager, SGME (Steam Generator Management and Engineering).
Responsibilities•Will function as the technical/programmatic lead for steam generators for assigned sites.
•Will represent Duke Energy Steam Generator Program in the EPRI SGMP
•Ensures Steam Generator inspections are conducted IAW programmatic requirements.
•Serves as central point of contact for steam generator issues for assigned sites.
•Integrates steam generator activities into site plans and programs.
•Keeps site and fleet engineering management informed of relevant steam generator issues.
•Establishes scope for steam generator inspection and maintenance activities during steam generator outages.
•Reviews Degradation Assessments prior to outages to establish and/or validate steam generator inspection scope.
•Provides technical oversight for steam generator activities during outages.
•Reviews Condition Monitoring and Operational Assessments reports to ensure they are thorough and accurate.
•Support steam generator modification documentation as required.
•Provides support for site regulatory issues involving steam generators.
•Prepares for and supports NRC steam generator outage inspections.
•Issues reports to the NRC on steam generator inspection results and repair activities.
•Maintains documentation required to communicate steam generator health consistent with stablished criteria and programmatic expectations.
•Evaluates and resolves structural issues involving steam generators.
•Dispositions code issues involving the steam generators, including interface with ANII.
•Interfaces with various external groups on steam generator issues (OEM, consultants).
•Coordinates periodic Steam Generator Review meetings for assigned sites.
•Reviews industry operating experience and vendor information letters to determine applicability during inspection scope development.
•Maintains EPRI SGDD database for assigned sites.
•Performs assessment and benchmarking activities for assigned steam generator areas.
•Provides support for INPO Steam Generator Review Visits as assigned.
•Initiate and oversee contracts for Steam Generator activities.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Nuclear Engineer III
•Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
•A Master 's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
•4-6 years of engineering experience
•Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
Sr Nuclear Engineer
•Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
•A Master's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
•Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
•Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
Additional Qualifications
•Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Materials Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
•Previous work experience with steam generator programs, maintenance, or design
•Working knowledge of EPRI Steam Generator Guidelines
•Working knowledge of Eddy Current testing (ECT)
•Working knowledge of ASME Codes (examples: B31.1, Section XI),
•Previous experience working at a commercial nuclear plant.
•General knowledge of nuclear plant systems
•Excellent oral and written communication skills
•Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
•Effective problem-solving and analysis skills
•Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
•Physically able to access steam generator work areas to monitor and observe work.
Specific Requirements
•Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
•In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
•Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
•Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
•This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
•Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
•Occasional overnight travel.
