Job Description
Hexium is seeking an experienced multidisciplinary engineer or laser/optical engineer to lead our engineering team as we build a device that integrates high-power laser and optical systems with metal vapor deposition in high vacuum. In this role you will work in a dynamic R&D environment, collaborate with our scientific team to define requirements, lead our engineering team through end-to-end engineering, and help build an expert team and shape our engineering organization as we scale.
Company
Hexium is an early-stage company building hardware at the cutting edge of laser science, plasma physics and atomic physics. Join our team to help build transformational technology for supplying isotopes to the clean energy industry. We are based in the vibrant city of Austin, TX and offer a competitive compensation package that includes medical and dental benefits, 401(k) matching, employee stock options, performance bonuses, and paid time off.
Responsibilities
•Manage a team of engineers designing a system that integrates high-power lasers and optics with high-vacuum chambers and metal vapor deposition.
•Work with our physics team to define system requirements and technology development roadmaps.
•Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure on-time and on-budget execution.
•Build a multidisciplinary team of engineers across mechanical, electrical, optical, and controls disciplines as we scale.
•Mentor and develop a technical team capable of delivering complex, cross-disciplinary projects.
•Drive recruiting, onboarding, and performance management processes to scale and retain top technical talent.
•Communicate across physics, manufacturing, and leadership teams, driving alignment on priorities, risks, and technical decisions.
•Drive hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk management activities
•Establish and maintain engineering best practices across all engineering disciplines, including rigorous design reviews, safety protocols, and quality assurance processes.
Required Qualifications
•5+ years of experience in the design of complex equipment in a highly technical industry such as lasers and optics, aerospace, nuclear, automotive, semiconductor, or national laboratories.
•Experience building and scaling an engineering organization, processes, procedures, and culture from the ground-up.
•Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing complex projects from R&D through commercial deployment.
•Strong foundational knowledge in engineering physics principles such as structural mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, electromagnetism, and heat transfer.
•B.S., M.S., or PhD in a core engineering discipline (ME, EE, NE,etc) or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications
•Strong technical background in laser and optical systems.
•Experience working with high power lasers or metal vapor sources.
•Prior experience working in a research and development environment, startup, or high-growth environment.
