What We Are Looking For

GVEC is looking to hire you for the position of Substation Technician I to deliver the unexpected with a willingness to continuously develop yourself, your department and our organization. As a Substation Technician I, you will help monitor low, medium, and high-voltage substation and distribution electric systems. This position will involve fieldwork including switching, equipment maintenance and calibration under minimal supervision.

Your Pay

The minimum starting pay for this role is $30.00/hr plus bonuses that are tied to a multitude of organizational benchmarks set forth annually. Pay will be determined by skills, qualifications and experience.

How You’ll Help

- Installing, testing and commissioning of substation apparatus and associated equipment

- Conducting routine inspections and preventive maintenance of substation equipment to identify and address potential issues

- Troubleshooting and diagnosing electrical faults or malfunctions in substation apparatus

- Performing repairs and replacements of faulty components, ensuring proper functionality and adherence to safety standards

- Conducting electrical tests including insulation resistance, power factor and transformer ratio tests to ensure equipment performance and compliance

- Assist in the planning, coordination and execution of substation maintenance and outage schedules

- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors and other technicians to develop and implement maintenance strategies and improvement plans

- Maintain accurate records of work performed including equipment maintenance history and testing results

- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment

- Keep up to date with industry standards, regulations and advancements in substation apparatus technology

- Required to respond to problems during and outside normal business hours including holidays and weekends, including on-call schedules

Experience/Skills You’ll Need

- Familiarity with electrical testing equipment and techniques

- Understanding of electrical safety procedures and regulations

- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, diagrams and technical manual

- Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work with precision

- Strong communication and teamwork skills

- Ability to work in various weather conditions and confined spaces

Preferred Experience/Skills

- Technical certifications or vocational training in electrical systems

- Strong knowledge of substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, switches and protective relays

- Experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of substation apparatus or similar equipment

- Experience with solid-state circuitry and computer-based test equipment, control, monitoring and analysis systems and associated tools. This experience would typically include performing electrical maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting

- Knowledge of GVEC system and equipment

- Proficient computer skills

- Knowledge of metering, relay settings and testing software

- Knowledge of overcurrent and protective devices required
