Serviceman 2nd Class - Gas Department

- Job Qualifications:

Under Class C supervision, following established principles, methods, policies, rules and regulations involved in the adjustment of customer's complaints on high or low gas pressure service, install or remove gas meters, regulators and related piping, fabricate and assemble gas meter connections, and be qualified to do the following and related work as assigned:

- All duties of Apprentice–Gas Department.

- Operate, test, and inspect gas appliances such as gas ranges, water heaters, furnaces, and other gas appliances on customers’ premises; evaluate appliances to determine safe operation.

- Install, remove, and repair all types of gas services, meters, regulators, and fabricate and assemble meter connections.

- Locate and repair gas leaks on customers’ premises.

- Answer and respond to on-call duty, fire alarms, and emergency calls.

- Inspect industrial, commercial, and residential gas-fired equipment such as boilers and food service appliances; adjust thermostats as required for testing.

- Respond to emergency gas situations by taking control of the scene, establishing safety perimeters and evacuation zones, determining procedures, and performing safe gas shutdowns.

- Work closely with state, parish, city agencies, other utilities, and contractors to ensure proper and safe excavation practices around gas facilities.

- Perform gas leak investigations.

- Make thorough and complete investigations of damaged gas facilities.

- Efficiently operate multiple computer applications related to gas operations.

- Make complete investigations and detailed reports on any explosion, accidents, fire, or damage or any kind on which assigned.

- Check operation of company pressure-reducing equipment.

- Lock and unlock gas meters.

- Plan, lay out, lead, train, and direct work crews in a safe and efficient manner.

- Demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities for covered tasks in compliance with Department of Transportation and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) requirements.

- EXPERIENCE AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a qualified Apprentice – Gas Department, or equivalent related experience meeting prior classification requirements.

- Maintain a valid automobile and truck driver’s license, TWIC card, and any other required licenses, background checks, or identification.

- Knowledge of city streets and rural roadways.

- Thorough knowledge of materials and proper use of tools and equipment.

- Thorough knowledge of the layout and characteristics of gas distribution systems, services, and meters.

- Working knowledge of company gas distribution practices and standards.

- Familiarity with company service policies and their application.

- Knowledge of company regulations governing non-payment disconnects, repossession of merchandise, and diversion of gas.

- Practical knowledge of gas-burning equipment, meters, regulators, piping systems, and related apparatus.

- Familiarity with city plumbing codes related to gas piping.

- Ability to perform semi-routine operations of moderate complexity using standard procedures.

- Knowledge of company safety rules; ability to administer approved resuscitation methods and provide practical first aid.

- Ability to acquire and maintain skills as technology evolves, including electronic mapping, pipe locating, and leak detection systems.

- PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

- Ability to detect the presence of natural gas.

- Good hand-eye coordination and physical dexterity.

- Full use of mental and physical faculties.

- Strength and endurance sufficient for strenuous labor in all outdoor weather conditions.

- PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS

- High level of alertness in identifying hazards, abnormal operating conditions, and preventing accidents.

- Willingness to work under unusual and normal working conditions associated with the position.

- Ability to receive and communicate instructions clearly and professionally, inspiring respect and confidence from supervisors and coworkers.
