About This Job

Northback is a Canadian company focused on the development of the Grassy Mountain steelmaking coal project in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Advisor Permitting & Planning

to join our team in either our Crowsnest Pass office or our downtown Calgary office.

Reporting to the Senior Manager Safety, Health & Environment, the Senior Advisor Permitting & Planning is responsible for coordinating internal and external resources for compliance reporting, regulatory submissions, and application processing. This role requires project management skills including time management, resource planning, project tracking, and progress reporting. The incumbent will work with a combination of internal technical teams, external consultants, regulators, rightsholders and stakeholders. The Senior Advisor Permitting and Planning must demonstrate steadfast commitment to workplace safety and environmental leadership.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Coordinate, schedule, and manage authorizations and applications under the

Public Lands Act

,

Historical Resources Act

,

Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act

,

Coal Conservation Act

,

Water Act

, and other applicable legislation

- Prepare and submit regulatory reports relating to coal exploration, reclamation, water usage, and other regulated activities

- Manage Statements of Concern (SOCs) and Information Requests (IRs) and coordinate responses to meet regulatory requirements

- Maintain a project Commitments Register and internally communicate commitments

- Deliver progress reports on permitting and approvals

- Develop agendas and take minutes for meetings and stakeholder events

- Coordinate internal authoring and senior reviews of documents before submission

- Assist in compiling and formatting regulatory submissions

- Review and contribute to Work Plans, Assessments, Inspections, and Reports

- Maintain a project schedule, internal progress reporting system, and regulatory filing system

- Support internal business units and teams with securing authorizations and approvals to meet project schedule needs

- Monitor trends in regulatory permitting and communicate anticipated and known permit and commitment conditions related to construction, commissioning, and operations in Alberta

- Regularly access and download relevant filings from regulatory websites and registries


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

- Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences or Project Management or related disciplines (equivalent combination of education and regulatory experience also considered)

- 5+ years of relevant experience in environmental and regulatory approvals, preferably in a mining and/or heavy construction environment in Alberta

- Demonstrated experience working with the Alberta Energy Regulatory (AER), Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC)

- Expert knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation and understanding of industry standards

- Working knowledge and experience in:

- Spatial data management (e.g. ArcGIS)

- Land dispositions and land standing reports

- Water use reporting

- AER One Stop, ETS, and DDS

- Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office and SharePoint, MS Projects, ArcGIS)

- Valid driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract

- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities and deliver on critical deadlines

- Excellent verbal communication skills (this role may be required to speak publicly and engage with members of the public on occasion)

- Excellent written communication skills (this role requires technical report writing)

- Knowledgeable of, and experienced in, the fundamentals of environmental management, compliance, and environmental monitoring principles

- Ability to interpret and communicate technical compliance requirements in the field

- Comfortable interacting with internal and external stakeholders and members of the community

- Demonstrated strength in critical thinking and decisive action in high stress situations


LOCATION

This role will be based out of our Crowsnest Pass office, or our downtown Calgary office.

Crowsnest Pass is a mountain community located two hours south of Calgary, Alberta. The area has a population of 6,100 and offers numerous services, including a 24-hour emergency, acute, and continuing care hospital, schools from kindergarten to grade 12, a sports complex, a championship golf course, major banks/credit union, restaurants, and supermarkets. Crowsnest Pass is famous for its spectacular mountain vistas and is a favourite destination for downhill and cross-country skiing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, caving, fly fishing and hunting.
