About The Job:
We are seeking an experienced Industrial Controls Engineer with a background in instrumentation and control systems including PLC and SCADA systems, specifically for water and wastewater facilities. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience working on projects related to water treatment, wastewater treatment, pumping facilities, water storage/conveyance, and wastewater collection facilities. Knowledge of US codes and standards are needed for this role. This role is based in our Maricopa, AZ office.
Duties (not limited to):
•Design and layout new systems or replacements for obsolete PLCs (programmable logic controllers) using the latest control platform, including new or re-written programs. Integrate with the supervisory system by creating necessary HMI (human-machine interface) tags and alarms.
•Coordinate contractors and operations staff and technology during construction and implementation of new control systems.
•Modify and expand programming when new equipment or instrumentation is added to the system. Instrumentation includes VFDs (variable frequency drive), analog, or digital instrumentation, whether connected via current loop, Ethernet IP, Modbus, or ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange).
•Review single-line diagrams, power plans, control schematics, hazardous location plans and conduit block diagrams.
•Manage and maintain instrumentation & control systems, including Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), motor controls, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, SCADA systems, fiber-optic & copper communication networks, and radio telemetry.
•Review shop drawings, prepare responses to Requests for Information (RFIs), and develop engineer’s clarifications for instrumentation and controls.
•Perform field inspections; assess electrical, controls, and instrumentation systems.
•Participate in the start-up and commissioning of instrumentation and controls equipment.
•Review specifications for instrumentation and controls to be specific for a project.
•Develop standard guide specifications from unwritten GWR practices.
•Review outside consultants PLC code and SCADA development to meet GWR standards and methods.
•Provide technical support and troubleshoot all equipment related to automated systems.
•Train and instruct operators, electricians and instrument personnel in the use and understanding of automated systems.
•Provide technical support, which includes coordination with engineering staff at the treatment plants on the proper integration and installation of the automation systems at pumping and booster stations, water storage facilities and pressure and flow control sites.
Required Skills:
•Knowledge of control systems, including ladder logic control strategies
•Ability to program Rockwell automation PLCs and PACs using ladder logic and function block programming
•Knowledge of computer programming including loops, conditionals and subroutines.
•Knowledge of IPv4 networking
•Knowledge of serial and Ethernet communications protocols, including Modbus TCP/IP and CIP
•Written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information in writing
•Verbal communication skills to effectively interact with co-workers and vendors
•Decision-making and problem-solving skills to handle complex technical issues as they arise
•Ability to utilize computer software, including Microsoft Office suite
•Ability to read electrical, piping and construction prints and diagrams
•Ability to use basic electrical test equipment for troubleshooting issues
•Ability to read and understand technical manuals when installing new equipment and instruments
•Ability to remain calm and stay in control during high-pressure situations
•Ability to work both independently and as a team to solve technical issues
•Ability to remain current with constantly changing hardware and software associated with industrial control systems
•Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks/projects

Physical Demands: Sitting for extended periods; prolonged periods of time with repetitive motions of hands and fingers; close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus; climb stairs, navigate uneven terrain; use fingers to grasp and move small objects; ability to hear and recognize sounds; able to react quickly using hands, fingers, or feet; able to utilize personal protective equipment as appropriate for safety. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to thirty pounds. Work is performed in an office and outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise from construction site heavy equipment and inclement weather.

Ideal Candidate:
•Has a degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering with an emphasis on control systems and/or control systems security
•Has at least 5 years of full-time experience programming, repairing and maintaining control systems
•Is flexible, with desire to cross train into other areas and seek and accept additional responsibilities
